NEW HARBOUR BOARD MAP

A NOTABLE WORK A beautiful!vcoloured topographical map of Wellington Harbour has just been completed and hung in the board room of the Weftingtou Harbour Board. The map measures 12 feet by 8 feet, and shows the harbour and citv. It is beautifully shaded, different colours being used to show the varying depths of water from 3 to 5 fathoms, 5 to 7 fathoms, 7 to 10 fathoms, and 10 fathoms and over. The' map, which was executed bv Mr G. N. Sturtevant, a member ot the’ Harbour Board’s staff, also shows the harbour lights. An interesting portion of the map is that showing the railway deviation to Tawa Flat and the present line.. Tins reveals what a great saving in distance and grade the .new line will effect. “I don’t know that the people of Wellington fullv realise wliat a splendid asset they have in their magnificent harbour,”' declared the chairman of the board (Mr. J. G Cobbe), in drawing attention to the new map last night. He explained that the harbour embraced tome 20,000 acres, and there was a depth of 40 feet of water over twothirds of it. “No other harbour m the world,” be said, “offers such a safe haven to shipping.” The Harbour Board staff arc at present encased upon a berthage plan on similar lines.
