THE WINTER SHOW

PUBLIC INTEREST

CHILDREN ATTENTIVE PATRONS

Both the. Winter Show and the manufacturers’ exhibition are still being well patronised by the public, and school parties arc visiting them daily, so that the educational side of the display is not being overlooked. The juveniles are keenly studying the manufacturers’ exhibits, with a view to competing in the essay competition, and the judge will probably have a considerable task to award the prizes. The people generally have displayed great interest in the Dominion’s manufactures, especially in domestic articles, clothing, furnishing, etc., while the machine which has, been stamping brass ash trays bearing the slogan, "What Wellington makes, makes Wellington," has been kept fairlv busy in the evenings. This is the same machine which was constructed for the making of the city’s milk tokens. There are numerous side-shows, but Miss Mae Kingsley, the expert glassblower, will only be there for two more evenings, as the company will sail on Friday for a big exhibition on the other side of the Tasman.

HUDSON’S CONCRETE CO., LTD., SPLENDID APPLIANCES. As one passes through the manufacturers’ exhibition at the Winter Show, it is. noticeable how great an interest is shown in the exhibits by the Hudson Concrete Company, Ltd., particularly in the requirements cf a more domestic character, and, in fact, it will well repay the householder to study the numerous items, such as coppers, boilers, chimneys, tabs, etc. The number of inquiries made keep the three assistants very busy. The “Hudson” boiler is an' excellent of Dominion manufacture, for. it is a well-finished article, made of strongly reinforced pumice concrete, with advantages that other boilers do not possess. Pumice is a non-conductor of heat, so that the water boils more quicklv (in fact, the rate is about a gallon' per minute) on less fuel than is required for the old-fashioned brick copper. What is more, the- water will retain its heat for 15 hours after the fire has gone out, so that one firing gives a supply of hot water for the dav’s domestic needs, not emitting a hot bath at night. So quickly do they boil that a special flauge is constructed on the top to prevent boiling over, and as no ironwork is necessary for guarding against fire, the risk of iron marks on clothing is obviated. There is a display showing the simple wav in which one can replace burnt-diit and broken bricks around the copper by pulling them down, leaving the chimney standing, and by pushing the "Hudson” boiler under that chimney.. Then the copper can be.cleaned ami used again in the Hudson. All the Hudson lists have particulars of how thjs is done, which makes it a pleasant Saturday afternoon job for the amateur or handy man. It costs very little more than the ordinary resetting, and is practically an everlasting job. There are also extra lengths of chimney flue to be used in the case of a new house or when a copper is being installed for the first time. These pipes are made with flqnges, and when being joined are easily put together. At a recent fire at Island Bay both building and contents were a total loss with tlie exception of the "Hudson” boiler, which withstood all the terrific heat and falling timber, and was not damaged in anv way. It remained as good as ever, and was installed in the new house erected on the site. The Hudson reinforced concrete tubs are made in one piece, beautifully smooth and have zinc headings which keep clean easily. There are no-sharp corners to collect dirt. These have been rounded off, and all silt goes away with the water, a wonderful improvement. These can be bought with or without concrete stands, as the Hudson can be put on the stand already erected. When away for a long holiday there is no need to worry about leaving water in the Hudson tubs, for they do not crack, and are practically everlasting. Hudson’s reinforced pumice concrete chimneys are made in various sizes, being suitable for the open fire and for the kitchen range. They are most useful for the seaside bach or the country and can be erected by amateurs in a few hours. The gas coppers are most economical, being made of reinforced pumice concrete. It was proved that fifteen hours after the fire was off the water was still hot,' thus showing the, value of pumice. These may be purchased through the ■Gas Company, who will install thdm on the same conditions and for the same price as their own makes. Elbows and pipes for connecting with chimnevs or flues are also a special feature of the company’s work. Smoke Down Chimneys. The manner in which the wind blows the smoke back down chimneys is the bane of the lives of many people, but Hudson’s have the solution to this disagreeable problem. They are sole agents in Wellington for the Robertson Louvre chimney top, which is absolutely guaranteed to prevent the wind blowing down a chimney. This new line has been tested out by over

100 people under all conditions, and by testimonials received it is considered perfect. The firm is also showing a number of exhibits made by the Hume Pipe Company, for whom Hudson’s Concrete Company, Ltd., are agents These include many specialities for the home, such as septic tanks—a great acquisition in suburban areas, where there is' no drainage scheme at present—paving slabs, split pipes for drains, or water channels, ornamental columns for verandas, porches, clothes posts which will neither break nor rot; fencing posts which will givei a finished appearance to any property," down to a concrete garden roller which is water-ballasted. They make numerous articles which will appeal to the fanning community, such as pig troughs, salt pans, pipes for culverting, , including floodgates, exceedingly useful contrivances. /It is worth while noting that the new telephone boxes—one at the Island Bay terminus and the other at the intersection of Contis Street and Onepu Road, Kilbirnie—are reinforced concrete products supplied to the Government by the Hume Pipe Company. Lists of the products of these companies can be obtained from the Hudson Concrete Company, Ltd., at its Wellington office, Beehive Chambers, 71 Courtenay Place. The local works are on Thbrudon reclamation. The head offices are in Auckland, with works at Penrose occupying five acres, and there are works at Palmerston North, so that their products are easily obtainable in anv part of the North Island. Those 'who contemplate house building will find it well worth while to study the advantages they can obtain, without extra cost, by consulting the Hudson Concrete Company.—(Published by arrangement.)

MUNT, COTTRELL, NEILSEN’S & CO., LTD. MOTOR BODY BUILDERS. One of the most attractive exhibits in the industrial section of . the Wellington Winter Show is that made by Messrs Munt, Cottrell. Neilsen aud Co., Ltd., the well-known firm of motor-body builders. This exhibit comprises a Vauxhall car with a “M.C.N.” saloon body, upholstered in red leather and finished throughout by the famous Duco process. This body was not especially made for show purposes, but is one of a number at present being built tinder contract, ami consequently is a fair average sample of the excellent work turned out by Messrs. Munt, Cotrell, Neilsen and Co., Ltd. The firm’s large factory at Petone, which covers nearly an acre of ground, is one of the most modern , and complete in New Zealand, being equipped with the latest machinery and every possible device to make for excellence’ of workmanship at a minimum cost. Messrs. Munt, Cottrell, Neilsen aud Co., Ltd., specialise in all classes of motor coachwork from the modest two seater car to the large commercial truck or bus, every body leaving the factory showing such excellence of design and workmanship as to compare more than favourably with the imported article. The factory is under the management of Mr. C. L. Neilsen, who lias had a large experience of the trade. A cause for much favourable comment by visitors to the Winter Show is the beautiful finish of the Vauxhall car. This is done by the special Duco process, which forms .a special department at the "M.C.N.” works, and is the latest and most efficient method of car painting. (Published by arrangement.) A report of the Wellington-South Canterbury football match will be broadcasted at the Winter Show (Shed 29) this afternoon._____
