Tho desirability of ’ purchasing land in tho Akatarawa Valley has been publicly challenged by Councillor D. It. Hoggard, of Hutt County Council. No very cogent reasons for such purchase have been adduced in reply. Under tho provisions of the draft Bill it is apparently quite open for the projected Board of Control to deal in committee with the acquisition of private lands, and there is nothing to ensure an independent valuation of such lands Before purchase. This is p very unsatisfactory condition of Mr. Strand for all that is known to the contrary, may intend to offer his land in the Akatarawa Valiev at a purely nominal price in furtherance of a scheme in which he has interested himself so actively. Ho rests,- however under no greater obligation than any other citizen, thus to sacrifice his private interest to tho public weal. Few peonle can afford to make lavish gifts of interest in land by the thousand acres, and nubile life would bo impossible for inoiA if anything of the sort were a general practice. HORORATA ARRIVES. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company s Hororata arrived in the stream at Wellington shortly before 10 o’clock yesterday morning from London, via Panama and Suva. Pratique was granted, and the ship berthed at No. 1 south (outer tee) Queen’s Wharf shortly before noon. The Hororata had a fine weather voyage until two days prior to arrival at Wellington, where strong winds and heavy seas were encountered. Captain E. Holland is stiff in command of tlie vessel, and his officers arc: —Chief, Mr. E. A. Burtou: second, Mr. B. Evans; third. Mr. F. T. Tether; fourth, Mr. E. A. Bamforth; chief engineer, Mr. Brabban; second, Mr, Fell; third, Mr. Ryde; fourth, Mr. Smith; radio operator. Mr. A. Trcherne; chief steward, Mr. Harding. The Hororata is expected to leave Wellington at the end of tho week for Auckland, to complete discharge. MATATUA DELAYED. The Shaw. Savill aud Albion Company advise that the Matat/ia was delayed at Oamaru yesterday owing to rain. The vessel will leave there to-morrow for New Plymouth and Wellington, for further loading. The Matatua is due at Wellington next Wednesday, and will sail from hero on August 5 for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. She is timed to sail .from Auckland on August 15 for Antwerp aud London, via Cape Horn. SALVAGING THE BIVERINA. Salvaging operations at *he wreck of the steamer, Riverina on. the Victorian coast are now in fuff swing The purchasers are having some difficulty in transporting the cargo saved from the wreck. Bullock teams from the Gippsland Lakes district b»vc since been requisitioned, and, working witli sledges, they have been successful in moving part of the cargo to Mallacoota The cost f transport is proving a serious matter in connection with the venture. SOMERSET LEAVES LIVERPOOL. News has becu received by the Federal Company that lhe Somerset sailed from Liverpool on Saturday with general cargo to discharge at Auckland. Wellington. Lyttelton. Dunedin, and Bluff. Tbe vessel is due at Auckland on August 31, aud at Wellington a week later. PAKEHA LEAVES LONDON. A. cable message to tho Shaw, Savill and Albion Company states that tho Pakoha left London on Saturday afternoon with general cargo to discharge at Auckland, Wellington, and Napier, rhe vessel is expected at Auckland on August 30, and will reach Wellington about September 6. MOERAKI PAYS OFF. The Moeralu, which was to have left Wellington on Monday night for 1 ort Chalmers to lay up. is uow to tic up at Wellington. Tho reason for this change is tho demand by two members of the crew for a month's wages to be paid for the trip. The crew have been paid off, and the vessel will lie up here. MM'NGANUI LEAVES SYDNEY. Cabled advice has been received by too Union Company that the Maimganui clcttred Sydney at midnight on Monday for Wellington. The vessel is due here on Friday afternoou, aud is to lay up hero. MANUKA FOR. MELBOURNE. The Manuka is now scheduled to leave Wellington at 5 p.m. to-day for Melbourne direct, where she is duo next Tuesday. VANCOUVER MAIL STEAMERS. Union Company advise that the Kawatiri was expected to clear Newcastle at 10 p.m. yesterday with coal for Wellington. She is due hero next Monday. The Opihi will clear Dunediu tomorrow for Wellington, Nelson, New Plymouth, and Westport, aud is due here on Tuesday. ~ , The Waipiata will clear Auckland on Saturday for Wellington, Lyttelton, and’ Dunedin, and is due here on Monday. The Katoa will clear Dunedin tomorrow, via Timaru and Lyttelton, for Wellington aud Auckland, and is duo hero on Sunday. The Kittawa will leave Wellington today for Greymouth, to load for Wellingtou, and tlie Komata is to leave here to-day for Westport, to load for this port.
