WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB

FIFTY-FIRST ANNUAL MEETING. The fifty-first annual general meeting of the Wellington Chess Club was held last week, the president <Mr. W. Maoway) presiding over a large attendance of members. The annual report, which was adopted, referred to the j iibilee celebrations of the club, held on June 16, 1876. It. J. Barnes and F. K. Kelhng were stated to have tied lor first place In the club's senior championship (necessitating a play-off), while A. W. Gyles. G. P. Anderson, and W. E. Mason occupy third, fourth and fifth positions respectively on the ladder. A. E. -lessup won the intermediate tourney, W. B. Clark being runner-up. The -unior event was won by W. Dornbusclt, with D. McArthur second. The Petherick handicap tourney resulted in a tie between E. S. Taylor and F. Grady. The prizes will be presented to the various winners at the Wellington League’s North v. South match. Quite a number of ladder matches were played throughout the season. The club won the club championship of the Dominion. There are five games yet to be played in ths league’s "champion of champions" contest. The balance-sheet, which was also adopted. showed a credit balance. The election of officers resulted as fob lows:—Patron. Sir Harold Beauchamp; president. Mr. W. Mackay; vice-presidents, Messrs. F. K. Rolling. A. T. Craven, E. S. Taylor and 11. G. Lee; committee. Messrs. T. Foully, G. Wigham. W. White. P. Anderson, and J C. McCrea: match committee. Messrs. W. White. W. Wring, and E. S. Taylor; delegates to New Zealand Chess Association. Messrs. A. W. Gyles and W. Toomath; delegates to Wellington Chess League, Messrs. W. Toomath and W. White; hon auditor. Mr. A. W. Gyles; hon librarian, Mr. W White; hon. treasurer, Mr O. S. Lambert; hon. secretary. Mr. W. Toomath; hon. renorter and assistant hon. secretary, Mr. F. R. Rolling. It was decided to rigidly enforce the rule In future requiring a written explanation in full from any person not keening a tourney appointment who wishes to be accommodated with a later date.
