THE RACING WORLD

NELSON MEETING CONTINUED GAMECOCK WINS MOTUEKA HANDICAP GLEN MEMORIAL TO GOLD MINT (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Nelson, February 24. The Nelson Jockey Club’s meeting was continued today in brilliant warm weather. Gamecock won the principal handicap from Bonhomme and Para, and in the Flying Handicap Buoyant scored from Royal Game and Misgovern.

A protest by the owner of the second horse. Ocean Whispers, in the Matai Trot, against the winner, Wenlo, on the score of inconsistent running, was dismissed. There was only a moderate attendance, and the totalisator figures for the day were £7473. There was no corresponding day last year. TRIAL STAKES.. Petal was a red-hot favourite for the Trial Stakes. There was never any doubt regarding the outcome of the race. All things considered her price was a good one. MOTUEKA HANDICAP. Bonhomme and Para were the favourites for the Motueka Handicap, but they both succumbed to Gamecock, who won decisively, after leading over the last seven furlongs. Bonhomme defeated Para comfortably for second place. TAHUNA HANDICAP. Gold Mint was the favourite for the Tahuna Handicap, but he steered into a good deal of trouble during the race, and could only finish fourth. Petal and Ranid Rose led Ardath to the straight, and the latter was winning at the distance. Here Ardfinnan came along and won nicely. Ardath might have won had he jumped out better. Bronstell ran a fair race again. PLYING HANDICAP. Buoyant was a firm favourite for the Flying Handicap, and, beginning well, he won practically all the way. Royal Game looked likely to be troublesome for five furlongs, but Buoyant shook him off comfortably at the finish. Misgovern did not begin too well, but he ran a good race. Glen Innes, who was fourth, ran a fair race, but he never shaped like a winner. STOKE HANDICAP. Arch Arrow was favourite for the Hack Spring. As on the first day he Jed all the way out. Riverina, under pressure, got up to win by a very short head. Molto was a good way back thitfl, just in front of Carigallan, who stopped over the last. FLYING GLEN MEMORIAL HANDICAP. Gold Mint was favourite for the concluding event, and after being handy all the way he won very easily from the pacemaker, Corn Rigs. Na Response, who was last early, came well with third place. Asleep was a moderate fourth and could do no better at any stage. Kilperon ran much below' his form of the first day. The winner’s performance was very impressive.
