ANNIVERSARY DAY REGATTA GOOD BREEZE FOR YACHTS There wore ‘'while horses" in plenty on the harbour last Saturday, when a good north-easterly breeze led yachtsmen to expect some good sailing, and some exciting racing during the course °f the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club's annual regatta. In this they wero not disappointed, for on the whole the regatta was a groat success. “From the point of view of the spectator weather conditions were not all that could lie desired. All day the skies were overcast, and there wero occasional light showers. As the day passed, however, the rain which threatened earlier gave definite signs of holding off. Mazy conditions, however, prevented spectators from following the events, the competing craft being out of sight for a large part of the distance. Entries were not as large as was the case in the previous regatta, and, in the morning, were reduced by scratchings due to late (•rivals. The morning was given over to events open to boats of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club only, while the afternoon events were open to boats of any recognised yacht and motor-boat club. The Rawene, owned by Mr. D. K. Blair, the commodore of the R.I’.N.Y'.C., had the misfortune to lose her chain-plate while at her moorings, owing to a collision with the Windward, and was unable to take part in the second-class handicap, the first race of the day. Thus the beginning of the regatta was somewhat delayed. The freshening breeze, however, enabled the course to be covered in good time, the morning events being finished by 12.30 p.m. The following were the officials mainly responsible for the management of the regatta:— Mon. starter and judge. The damage wrought, by kcas to sheep in the Marlborough province and adJoining districts is so serious that the Marlborough Sheepowners Tndushial Union of Employers is endeavouring to secure joint action amongst county councils in’ the Marlborough and adjoining districts in taking advantage ot ’he Government subsidy nf ss. per head tor tho destruction of these birds (states the “Express”). The union is commencing a conference of delegates of local bodies to be held at Blenheim to discuss the matter. The Waimea t.ountv Council has been asked to send a ’ delegate. Councillors staled that keas were fairly numerous in the high country in the Nelson district; and it was resolved, that the council work in with thd association and that the chairman be appointed delegate to the conference. The threepenny-bit. scorned by so many, geeius to find appreciation in West Africa. A recent traveller in the hinterland found the coin the only acceptable currency. The natives are ci.ilised enough to carry money, but they carry it on ‘.heir backs, and resolutely refuse to carry a weight of pennies. A thoughtful Government therefore, provides threepenny-bits. and everything is priced in multiples of threepence. Running ihort of ready cash, the traveller induced a European store in one of the villages to change a. cheque, and received £2O in threepenny-bits. Mi‘.s Marie Burke and the tncnibers of tile J. C. Williamson “Wildflower” Comp.tny will arrive in Wellington tomorrow.
