CYCLE CHAMPIONS IN ACTION

LAMB .IN GREAT FORM WINS INVITATION SCRATCH RACE THRILLING FINISHES IN HANDICAP EVENTS R. A. ROSE RETIRES FROM THREE-MILE .RACE Dominion Special. Masterton, January 23. Conditions were ideal for the athletic meeting held on Saturday by the Mastertoil Amateur Athletic Club. '1 be gathering was notable in several respects. It is many years since such an array of leading athletes assembled in Mastertoll, and it is doubtful if_ the attendance was ever exceeded. The star events were cycling races. Some thrilling finishes were witnessed, and the enthusiasm of the crowd waxed high where the contests between the local champion (T. Oakley) and the Australian crack (R. W. Lamb) were concernctl- . , - Jit the one and a half miles cycle invitation scratch race Lamb jumped to the lead at the start; Oakley was last. Harrison assumed the lead in the second lap, to be replaced by Bright in the third. Oakley then forged ahead, attended by Lamb, but the fifth time round Oakley had dropped to' last position and Harrison led Lamb. Oakley, however, soon came to the front; Lamb challenged.and beat Oakley by a wheel in a most exciting finish. Harrison was tldl’d.

Lamb competed in the second heat of tlie mile but his handicap proved too great and he was unplaced. Ju" the first heat of th c two mile event thc pace quickened up in the third lap, when McEwen led Oaklev and Lamb, but soon after Booth secured the lead and Lamb dropped to fifth position. In thc seventh lap, however, Lamb forged ahead to be soon overtaken by Anderson and followed by Oakley. In the final round Lamb challenged and assumed first place; 11. Oakley displaced Anderson for second honours.

Eight started in the second heat, which T. Oakley won with ten yards to spare. A great race was witnessed in the final. After a false start T. Oakley took thc lead from Lamb in thc first round. The scratch men caught the field at thc finish of the second lap. A. Baker then cd Anderson, who took the lead in the fourth lap, followed by Baker and H. Oakley. Lamb and T. Oakley were still lying last. The sixth round was slow until Anderson again made the pace, when Hors full jumped out at thc back of the straight, followed hard by T. and 11. Oakley. In the run in a splendid finish resulted; T. Oakley gained thc lead over Baker and Lamb finished up in third place, while 11. Oakley was fourth.

A particularly exciting contest was witnessed in the three-mile cycle race, when fourteen competitors faced the starter. The limit men caught the field in the fifth lap, when Harrison was leading. McEwen and H. Oakley alternately had the lead in the sixth and seventh laps, but in the next round Booth came ahead, followed by A. and H. Oaklej'. Until the ninth lap Lamb and T. Oakley were side by side, but in the next circuit Lamb commenced to move up to fifth place. Harrison then broke away from the field, closely followed by A. Oakley and Lamb. This position was maintained until thc back was reached, when T. Oakley took a hand and reached third place. At the bell Oakley took the lead for a second from Lamb, who overtook him at the back, and, settling down, went after Harrison, who won by five yards. ■ Of the visiting runners, Eastwood and Cunningham were the best of the Wellington bunch. The appearance of R. A. Rose in the three-mile handicap was eagerly anticipated, but his retirement in the fourth lap showed that he is not up to form.
