TRENTHAM RACES

STAR STRANGER WINS RACING CLUB HANDICAP RUNS AN AUSTRALASIAN RECORD DEAD-HEAT IN THE OPEN SPRINT

(By

"The Watcher.”)

High-class and brilliant racing featured the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting at Trentham on Saturday held under perfect conditions. Star Stranger won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap by a very narrow margin from Piuthair, and thanks to the fast pace set early by Front Rank he succeeded in breaking the Australasian record for the distance. Footfall was third. In the Metropolitan Handicap there was a splendid contest, and at the finish the judge was unable to separate Limited and Paperchase for first honours, with Benzora and Mimetic almost in line with them. Another great finish was seen in the Douro Cup, the season’s principal hack event, the favourites Vesperus and Stormy being separated by only sufficient margin to declare in favour of Vesperus as against a deadheat. Another half-head finish was provided by Mr. Coyle in the concluding event, and altogether the day’s racing was one of the finest ever seen at Trentham. Favourites and well backed horses were in the money practically throughout the programme, and there was a slight increase in the totalisator returns, as against the corresponding clay last year.

Star Strauger on bis form in New Zealand since his return iroiu Sydney tu the spring could not have been expected to will the principal baud leap in the manner he did. Yet* be was a substantial secund lavourite, and was able to ruu an Australasian record for the distance. Probably the smaller field had something to do with his improveo form as against his running in the Cup, when lie finished eighth. This ia his first time in a place since he won the big spring handicap in Sydney, the Metropolitan, last October. Piuthair ran her best race since she won the Metropolitan Handicap oti the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, and she was unlucky to strike Star Stranger on Ids business day. As she finished practically on terms with him, she also ran better than the previous record for the journey. It is rather remarkable that the last three years have seen records run in this race. Listening Post and Star Ranger, the previous two winners, both ran the New Zealand tecord, Sniiii. JSJsec., but on Saturday Star Stranger beat this by llsec., which is also Jsec. better than the existing .Australasian record to the credit of Tom .McCarthy at Brisbane, and established in November, 1922, with 9.3 up. The fast time was due to the forcing tactics set bv the rider of Pront Rank. He took her to the front early, and at the end of the first half-mile was some dozen lengths in front of the leader of the bunch. Tie then gave her a breather, but sent her away again five furlongs from home She was still prominent as thev turned into the straight, but such a pace was asking too much, and she was left standing in the run to the post. Yet she finished fourth, and, differently handled, it looked as if she must have been hard to beat. Footfall ran another good honest race, but the pace completely cracked up the rest of the field. From a modest £2lB in the concluding event on Thursday and the position of tenth favourite, Vesperus jumped to the head of the quotations in the Douro Cup, admittedly a most difficult race to win, and when the machine closed he had been entrusted with no less than £23(56, Very few keen observers of recent form were found wanting to be on anvthing else than Vesperus, and he duly carried them through, not without, however, a real thrill when Stormy came at him over the last bit, and just failed to get up. A victory for Stormy would have been the signal for a great popular demonstration, for lie carried his 9.9 like a real horse, and to run so close to another good one when conceding 231 b. was a remarkable feat Another feature of this contest was the forward running of Kilmiss, who finished third. She was third favourite for the High-weight Handicap the first day, but was not near a place. Yesterday she drifted to the position of eleventh favourite, but made a very bold showing, and a victory for her would have been a real surprise. Queen’s Choice began too slowly to iiave a winning chance, and ran in the rear for the most part. He came on well at the finish.

The Metropolitan Handicap saw Limited installed a very warm favourite, and true to Iris record, lie ran with great brilliancy, but could not score a clear-cut victory, having to divide the honours with Paperchase, whose recent form has been a model of consistency. Benzora ran a remarkably good race, and with a little luck he might have won. Ridden in the rear of the leaders; Mimetic made a much bolder display than he did out in front on Thursday, but he had every chance to do better than fourth. The weather was overcast and cool for the racing and ideal for spectators who attended in large numbers. Trentham, however, is so magnificently appointed that the large crowds are well distrbuted. The pools on the last four races all went beyond the £lO,OOO mark and that on the Douro Cup was the largest on the day, the totalisator handling in all the sum of £78,943 10s. as against £78,203 10s. on the corresponding dav last year, an increase of £740. With the very general tendency to totalisator decreases throughout the country, the increase in the Wairarapa New Year meeting, and the maintenance of the previous year’s figures at Trentham is an indication of tlv- popularity of racing with the Wellington public, and also, it must be said, a tribute to their judgment in the selection of dividend payers, for nothing slumps the machine figures like the success of outsiders As showing how well the public picked them on Saturday, the following is the list of the positions of the first and second horses in the betting:—Order of -fav ouritism: hirst race 1 and 2; second race, 2 and 1; third race, 2 and 4; fourth race, 1 and t>; filth race, 2 and sixth race, 1 and 3; seventh race, 1 and 2; eighth race, 2 ami 1. Those whose method of picking winners is fo back every starter—and there are quite a few of them—would have had a verv thin time on Saturday M U NG A ROA HIGH -WE IGI IT HANDICAP Mint Leaf was a solid favourite for the High-weight Handicap, Wedding March, Capitulation, and Sottana being the best backed of the others. When settled down Bennanee took charge from Wedding March, Alaric, Capitulation, and Mint Leaf. Bennanee was well clear of Wedding March and

Alaric down the back, with Capitulation, Mint Leaf, and Lady Passenger next. Running for the turn Bennanee was still clear of Capitulation ami Lady Passenger, followed by Alaric, Mint Leaf, and Wedding March. Bennanee led into the straight from Capitulation and Lady Passenger, with Mint Leal just behind them. Mint Leaf made his effort at the distance, and came on to win very easily by three lengths. In a good race for second place Wedding March beat Bennanee bv a length and a half. Lady Passenger was a neck away, and then came Ardlinnan and Capitulation. It was a good thing for the topweight. TRIAL PLATE. Assurance was a hot favourite for the Trial Plate. Crown Area and Hynigreat were the best backed of the others. Assurance got badlv away. Crown Area and Zarisee were first out, and down the back Crown Area and Zarisee led Serotina, Kihnovicr, and Crossbow. Across the'top the order was Zarisee, Crown Area, Serotina, ami Hynigreat. Zarisee, Crown Area, and Assurance were abreast ' into the straight from Serotina and Kilnioylci. Once in line Crown Area shot away and won easily bv three lengths from Assurance, wlio beat Serotina by a length and a half. Crossbow was fourth, and then came Hynigreat and Kilnioyler. JANUARY HANDICAP. Centrepiece, Corn Money, Rascal, King Smock, Penman, Ring the Bell, Jov Bird, aqd Inferno were all well backed for the January Handicap. Inferno was not mounted until Ihe horses were lined up. He then began to perform his usual antics, and was stood behind the field, where he got away all right. King Smock, Joy Bird, Penman, and Rascal’were early prominent from Roval Damon. Corn Money did lot get awav too well, and Decoy Bird also got squeezed back. At the live furlongs the order was Joy Bird. Ring the Bell, Rascal, Inferno, and Centrepiece. Across the top Jov Bird still had charge from Inferno, Decoy Bird, Ring the Hell, Centrepiece, ami Corn Money. At the half-mile the order was Decoy Bird, Corn Money, Joy Bird, Inferno, and Perle de Leon. Decoy Bird led into the straight from Corn Money, Joy Bird, and Perle de Leon close up, King Smock being last. Once in line, Centrepiece put in his claim, and, finishing ven strongly, won by half a length from Rascal, who came up fas and cut Jov Bird out of second money by just over a length. Decoy Bird was'

fourth, followed by Royal Damon, Ring the Bell, and Corn Money, all well up. NURSERY HANDICAP. Thaw was a solid favourite from Otairi, Ti Tree, and Paleta lor the Nursery Handicap. Although Paleta drew the outside position, he was quickly in the lead with Chips, and they ran to the course proper with Wild Pigeon and Otairi, with Laughing Prince just in behind. Once in line, Paleta drew awav and won very comfortably by a couple of lengths. In a great finish for second place, Laughing Prince just headed Otairi on the post, with Tone right up. followed by Wild Pigeon and Chips. The winner’s performance was very impressive. RACING CLUB HANDICAP. Footfall and Star Stranger were firm favourites for the Racing Chib Handicap, Piuthair and Mask also being solidly supported. Passing the post the first time. Front Rank led from Allo-

way, Piuthair, Star Stranger, and bootfall, the last two being Merry Day and Fresco. At the mile, Front Rank was four lengths ahead of Footfall, and then came Piuthair, Mask, Count Cavour, and Star Stranger. Front Rank rushed awav down the back, and at the seven furlongs had charge from Alloway by twelve lengths, and then came Footfall, Piuthair, Star Stranger, Count Cavour, and Mask. Fror.t Rank was caught at the five furlongs, where she just led Piuthair, Allowav, Footfall, and Mask. She was off again round the top, and led bv two lengths from Piuthair, who was clear of Mask, Alloway, Footfall, and the top-weights. Front Rank led into the straight bv two lengths from Piuthair, Allowav, and Mask, with Footfall on the outer, end Star Stranger next. Piuthair closed on the leader at the distance, where Footfall and Star Stranger put hi their claims, and in a great finish Star Stramrer got up to beat Piuthair bv half a head. Footfall was three lengths awav. followed bv

Merry Day, Alloway, and Fresco, the last two being Cavour and Mask. DOURO CLIP. Vesperus was a solid favourite for the Douro Cup, Queen's Choice and Stormy being verv solidly supported. The remainder were at good prices. Battle Colours ami Kilmiss got away badly. Bronstell, Son o’ Aline, Gardant, \eitigern, and Stormv were early prominent, with Vesperus and Jemida-r next, Queen’s Choice being well back. At the file furlongs, Son o’ Aline and Bronstell led from ’ Gardant, Jemidar, Stormy, Vesperus, and Rosenor, Queen’s Choice being last with Horomea. Running for the "turn, Son of Aline and Bronstell were together, and then came Gardant, Temidar, Rosenor, Stormv, and A esnerus, Queen’s Choice still being last. Son o’ Aline and Bronstell led into the straight from Gardant. Vesperus, Jefflidar and Gold Mint, with Outfit on the outer. Once in line, Vesperus nut in his claim and looked a comfortable

winner, but Stormy came very fast inside the distance, and Vesperus had to do Iris level best to beat him home bv half a head, with Storm v going the better. They were clear of Kilnnss, who also came fast over the last bit, and then came Vertigern, also finishing well, followed bv Outfit, Starboard Light, Queen’s Choice, Peggy Ford, and Horomea. Queen’s Choice began too slowly t oliave any chance. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. Limited was a very solid favourite for the Metropolitan Handicap, the best backed of the others being Paperchase and Mimetic. It was a wonderful race from start to finish,, resulting in one of the closest. finishes of the 5 meeting, four horses going over the line together. Limited, Paperchase, Father O’Flynn, Licmius, Nad-

ariuo and Receipt ran practically, in line for a couple of furlongs, just ahead of Mimetic. Then they sorted themselves out, Limited and Paperchase being the most prominent on to the course proper, from Mimetic and Benzora. This quartet joined issue two furlongs from home, and in a magnificent race up the straight Limited and Paperchase dead-heated for first place, with Benzora and Mimetic only inches away. Receipt, Standard, end Licinius were next. CAAIP HANDICAP. The Riccarton hack Sagittarius was considered unbeatable in the concluding event, and lie carried well on towards £lOOO, as against less than £l5OO on the second favourite, Lady Ideal, who was very little ahead of Some Lad. From start to finish the favourites were the only ones in the picture. Sagittarius and Lady Ideal ran together throughout, and, contrary to expectations, the latter saw it out to the bitter end and beat the. favourite by a head decisively. Some Lad and Baby Bun made a fair showing, and were handy to the leading pair, without any hope of beating them, and Royal Tractor, Dark Spot, and Frivolous were the most prominent of the others. FIELDS FOR THIRD DAY The summer meeting of I’ie A lington Racing Club will be concluded at Treiitham to-day. Even the most casual glance through the fields shows that the task of backers is not going to be an easy one, and the closer the fields are studied the more difficult they appear. Form should, however, be worth following. WAALACEVILLE lIIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. One mile. Vesnerus ... 'J 7 Tanuadice .. 9 0 Vesperus is in the next race, and he should' be prominent in whichever he starts. Wedding March and Oriflamb have the best form amongst the others. KELBUItN HANDICAP, of 309 sovs.

Stormy and Vesperus should both run well again, as they are a class above the field. Outfit, Kilmiss, and Assurance all have form at the meeting in their favour. Outfit did not get too good a run in the early .stages of the Douro Cup, and he may be the hardest one for the topweights. x

Form in tlie Wellington Stakes was first-class, and High Finance, who did not get a good start in that event, and then was fourth, should show up to-dav. Melissa and Sudden Storm may run well forward.

Horomea has not been too lucky in her starts so far at the meeting, and may do better to-day in the smaller field, although she has a good weight. Starboard Light, Battle Colours, Gold Mint, and Serotina have all shown form. Starboard Light may prove Horomea’s most difficult opponent, and a likely improver is Crossbow, who was a bit unlucky on Saturday. SUMMER HANDICAP, of 800 sovs.

gdgfd

Cup form points to Rapine " n 'J H. v_ nanna sliowng up in the Consolation Handicap, and Alloway is a likely sort.

Form at the meeting points to Booster, Shirlev, Mimetic, Corn Money, and Benzora all running well. Comic Song ran Booster to a neck at Invcicaigill at New Year, ami is now in on bib. better terms, which may reverse the positions. However, Booster and Comic Song may prove the best of the southerners and Shirley of the northerners.

The concluding event is another puzzler, Stormy and Starboard Light have earlier engagements. Bank Note should run a merry five furlongs, and so should Sagittarius rnd Lady Ideal. The firstnamed meets Lady Ideal on 441 b. better terms than on Saturday. King’s Folly, Zarisee, and Aston are ell fast over the distance. Bank Note and Sagittarius may do best. There is a good chance of a great surprise here, and a speedy’ one is Rosenor. FOXTON MEETING OPA SCORES AGAIN Dy Teleghaph.—Pbess Association. Foxton, January 22. The weather was fine but overc’ast for the concluding day of the Foxton meeting, and there was an increased attendance. The sum of £17,180 was put through the totalisator, making a total of £31,599 for the meeting, against £39,023 for last year, a decrease of £7433.
