BEAM WIRELESS

TESTING OF AUSTRALIAN SERVICE EFFORTS TO AVOID FADING By Telegbaph press association Copyright. Loudon, January 20. It will be at least a fortnight before the inauguration of the beam service is possible—(l) because time is likely to be taken in analysing the results for th.e purpose of determining the period when a stabilised service is best achievable ; (2) because Canadian experiments in alternate wave-length may point to a solution of difficulties in the service to Australia. It is no secret that the Canadian service is subject to bad fading out, sometimes for the best part of twenty-four hours. Experts believe. that a resort to a longer wave in these times will overcome the fading. This theory will be tried out in a few days. Meanwhile, it is interesting to learn that China all day long is picking up our beam better than Australia. The explanation is that the outgoing waves are seeking the most direct route to travel from London slightly north of east before finally dipping to Australia. While it is obviously possible to conform to the requirements of a sevenhour day in broken time with an average of a hundred words a minute, experimenters are now aiming to ensure a certain all-hours’ service, even, if at a less speed. Tests show that signals from Melbourne reach London in onetwentieth of a second.
