EASTBOURNE BUSES

CONTROL BY COUNCIL FROM TO-MORROW MAYOR CONFIDENT OF SUCCESS The Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr. H. M. Jones)" stated yesterday that the motor buses at present owned and controlled by Messrs. Seivers and Bosher, and running between Wellington and Eastbourne, would be taken over and controlled by the Borough Council on and after New Year’s Day. The buses, of which there are six, are being examined by the Public Works Department’s engineers, and the Eastbourne Borough Council’s own inspecting engineer. No trouble is anticipated in this direction as most of the buses are practically new, having only been on the road a few months, while one lias only been delivered during the past week or two. The Mayor says that it is not intended to make any drastic changes in the system at the moment, either in regard to staff or time-table. Anv changes found to be necessarv will be brought in gradually and in the light of experience. “I intend,” the Mayor continued, "to devote considerable time and study to this new branch of our transport system, and confidently expect, with the assistance of the council and management, to bring about a considerable saving in our general expenses, without in any wav' impairing the efficiency of the ferry and bus services. Indeed, the travelling public will have in the dual service a unique and beautiful outing, inasmuch as passengers travelling on the outward journey by motor-bus with a return ticket will be able to return, if they so desire, by boat, where all outward bus tickets will be honoured if presented at due date. This should considerably assist a large number of of the travelling public during the holiday season, and is expected almost entirely to eliminate the peak load and overcrowding found most difficult to handle in all transport systems. “Things have been difficult for the ferrv management in the past,” concluded Mr. Jones. “What with competition from the bus service and higher running costs for the ferry steamers, we have been compelled to face many problems, but I look forward to 1927 with supreme confidence.”
