A LARGE TELESCOPE

FOR RUSSIAN OBSERVATORY. There is in course of construction at the optical works of Sir Howard Grubb, Parsons and Co., at Newcastle, a refracting telescope with an object glass of 41 inches diameter, for the observa- | tory at Simeis, in Southern Russia, which is an offshoot of the National Observatory of Russia at Poulkovo, Pear Petrograd. This objective will be the largest of its kind in the world by * fractional amount, the next m size being that at the Yerkes Observatwy, made ; bv the American firm of Alvan Claris t and Co. in 1897, which has. a, clear aperture of 40»inches. There are several : reflecting telescopes which have mrerora of diameter as large or larger* than this, one of 4D inches having recently been made by the Newcastle' firm for this same observatory at Simeis. refracting telescope has lately been supplied to the observatory of the Union of South Africa, at Johannesburg, by the Grubb, Parsons firm.
