The borough of New Plymouth has a record in the matter of the collection of rates which might well be the envy of other municipalities (states the "Taranaki Herald”). For the present year the amount collectable was, in round figures, £48,000, and on the last day before the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty, the amount outstanding was onlv very little more than 2| per cent, of’the total, and it is confidently anticipated that at the end of the financial year there will be nothing to carry over. As a matter of fact, after what was received by the next morning’s mail after the closing date for payment, a considerable sum was received, which, if taken into account, would still .further improve the position. For the previous year the only amount not paid is the small sum of £1 Is. Id., due by an absentee owner of property whose address has only just been discovered, and that amount should be received within a few days. The borough has the further distinction of having’ collected the whole of its rates since the 1918 period, with the single exception of the £1 Is. Id. referred to, and for the whole of that period nothing has had to be written off on account of rates not collected.
