THE RACING WORLD

CONCLUSION OF MANAWATU MEETING CIVILITY WINS LIVERPOOL HANDICAP OPEN SPRINT TO LADY BENTINCK (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Palmerston North, December 30. The summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club was concluded at Awapuni to-day in perfect weather. The race track was in good order and fast. There was some excellent racing, the winners getting home by very narrow margins. One double-figure dividend was recorded, but on the whole well backed horses had better luck, although only four favourites won handicaps in the three days. Civility won the principal handicap from Inferno and Peneus, the hot favourite, Reremoana being beaten into fourth place. In the open sprint Lady Bentinck beat Mireusonta and First Acre.

The meeting was as usual very capably managed by Mr. J. M. Johnston and the officials, and while the totalisator returns showed a substantial decline, that is only in keeping with the position throughoflt the country. During the three days some excellent racing was provided for the club’s patrons. Mr. W. Price, in the position of starter, did his work on the whole rather well. He is a very fair official, but allows too much latitude to unruly horses. There was a particularly outstanding incident to-day in the big ra.ce, in which the crowd eventually exhausted its patience, as did Mr. Price, who jumped down and punched Inferno on the head amidst an outcry. One can sympathise very freely with an official in Mr. Price’s position, but he could save a great deal of his trouble by standing unruly horses behind or sending them to the outside. In his endeavour to be fair and obtain good dispatches, he is inclined to be too meticulous. The totalisator to-day handled £31,93(5, as compared with £36,202 for the third dav last vear, a decrease of £4266. The total for the three days was £119,340, as against £141,560 twelve months ago, a decrease, all told, of £22,220. Up till the sixth race to-day favourites had won only one handicap at the meeting, but they came with a rush at the finish and took the last three events. TIRITEA HURDLES. Lady Passenger was a slightly better favourite for the hurdles than Blood Red. Little River made all the pace from Ladv Passenger, Lady Gay, and Blood Red. There was no alteration in the order of running until reaching the home turn, ’ where the field closed up. Lady Passenger turned for home from Matu and Sottano, and, once over the last fence, this trio was hard at it,...Sottano. prevailing by half a length from Lady Passenger, who just got home in front of Matu. Blood Red ran a fair race into fourth place, with Glenidle, who is improving with racing, next. WHITMORE HANDICAP. Pangolin was a firm favourite in the Whitmore Handicap, a race confined to apprentice riders. Acred was a good second choice. Petal, Elicit, Archon and Pangolin ran abreast all down the back and to the turn, where they were joined by Elysianor. They were still in line in the straight, where Acred, who

had lain handy, challenged, followed by Capitulation and Some Lad. A ihrlong from home thev were practically in line, but then some lad drew out and won well from Acred, who just headed Capitulation. Archon, Pangolin and Elicit were well up. The winner was an outsider. JUVENILE HANDICAP. Helen was a better favourite than Paleta for the Juvenile Handicap. Helen got badly left. Paleta, Tom Bracken, Crown Area and Reckless began best, and on the turn Paleta, Tom Bracken and Reckless were abreast ahead of Ducks Eggs and Crown Area. Poleta and Tom' Bracken drew away in the straight and Paleta managed to keep his head in front. Crown Area, a three-year-old gelding bv Acre, was a fair third, and Reckless was fourth. Helen was next and she must have been hard to beat had she got away well. Arrow Lad was next. LIVERPOOL HANDICAP. K Reremoana carried nearly’ half .the pool in the Liverpool Handicap. Civility and Joy Bird carried a good deal of the remaining money. There was a long delay at the start, caused by the antics of Inferno. He was certainly in a more lively mood than usual, but the starter missed many excellent opportunities of getting his field away. When finally let go Buoyant and Joy Bird ran finally let go’ Buoyant, Civility, and Jov Bird were first out. Buoyant ’ and Jov Bird ran to the front out of the straight from Reremoana and Civility. Down the back Inferno and Peneus ran up, and at the half-mils post Buoyant hnd Joy Bird were barely clear of Inferno, Peneus, Civility, and Reremoana. .On the turn. Inferno went up and led into the straight, where Reremoana. having been pocketed on the turn, was last. As Inferno turned for home he was challenged by Peneus and Civility. In a great finish Civility got up and won by a head, with Peneus only an-uother'half-length off. Reremoana was a good fourth. He was very unluckv, but Barry could have ridden him with better judgment. The others were outclassed. WESTBURY HANDICAP. Precious was a firm favourite for the Westbury Handicap, but solid support was also accorded Bank Note. Volplane, Miss Pat, and Royal Time got away poorly. Bank Note and White Ringlet going out from Powhiri and Precious. This was the order to the straight.

where Powhiri challenged Bank Note. The latter had to be ridden right out to win by a head. Precious was close up third. Royal Game, White Ringlet, and Star Chamber headed the bunch. CLANDEBOYE HANDICAP. Tiega and Allmarimba were solid favourites for the Clandeboye Handicap, Polar being the best' backed of the others Bonhonnib and Mali Jong gave some trouble at the start, but a good dispatch saw Allmarimba and Bonhoinme go out from Kilmiss and Santonin, with Ngata and Tiega next. There was no change till nearing the home turn, where Polar moved up. Bonbomme turned for home from Allmarimba, Kilmiss, Santonio, Polar, and Tiega, and in a rattling finish there were inches only in favour of Tiega against Bonhotnme. Kilmiss was a fair third, with Santonio, Polar, and Allmarimba well up CHRISTMAS HANDICAP. There was some good wagering in the Christmas Handicap, le Keroke winding up favourite from Black Mint and Great Day. Barryanda, Great Day, Zarisee, and Bronstell all began well. When settled down Zarisee, Bronstell, Black Mint, and Barryanda were racing in a bunch, with Hypnotic and Te Keroke at the head of the others. Zarisee was ridden until she was clear of the field, being followed round the turn by Black Mint, Barryanda, Great Day, Wilderness, Hypnotic, and Te Keroke. Once in line Zarisee collapsed. Wilderness and Black Mint being in front. Te Keroke and Great Day immediately challenged, and tn a great finish Te Keroke beat Great Day bv a head, with Wilderness right up. Black Mint and Hypnotic were next, and Barryanda headed the bunch. As well ridden as Te Keroke and Great Day, Wilderness (a rank outsider) would just about have got home. KAWAU HANDICAP. Lady Bentinck and Plain Sa-ling were the favourites for the Kawau Handicap, First Acre being the best backed of the others. Glen Innes got badly left, Lady Bentinck going out with Anthonie Plain Sailing, and Gold Box, with Tuk’e heading the bunch. On the tur> Lady Bentinck and Plain Sailing led Gold Box, Tukia, and First Acre. They turned for home thus, with little between them. When well in line Mireusonta • came with a rush, and a fine race home saw Ladv Bentinck bang on to beat Mireusonta by half a length, with First Acre a similar distance off. Gold Box, Plain Sailing, and Tukia were right up. Mireusonta was a rank outsider, and in another stride he would have won.
