CHRISTMAS, 1926
REMEMBERED AS COALLESS BY THOUSANDS OF, LONDON FAMILIES CELEBRATIONS ALL INDOORS London, December 26. Christmas, 1926, will be remembered as a coalless Christmas by thousands of greater London families unable to secure supplies. The position was so desperate in South London that the authorities were compelled to make deliveries on Christmas morning, which broke fine, but became dull later, rain falling in the afternoon and evening. Everywhere there was a joyous spirit, though trams and buses ceased early, and the streets were deserted save for a rare point policeman. Celebrations were all indoors, including that by Their Majesties at Sandringham.—Sydney “Sun” Cable.
MR. COATES REVELS IN ENGLISH CHRISTMAS London, December 26. Mr. Coates, who is staying with a relative at Aymestry Court, near Worcester, revelled in a real old-fashioned Christmas, including a fall of snow. HUNGARIAN PRISONERS RELEASED Budapest, December 26. The Regent, Admiral Horthy, pardoned 77 political and other prisoners. SYDNEY CROWDED WITH VISITORS TRADE REPORTED GOOD. Sydney, December 27. The city is crowded with Christmas visitors and trade is generally reported good, with money plentiful, despite high prices and the political unrest. The scarcity of green vegetables is a feature, and many families had to forgo them. The turnover of the Sydney Stock Exchange this year is easily a record. The shares of banks and most wellestablished companies are distinctly higher than they were a year ago.
