MODERN CANAAN
LAND OF MILK AND HONEY. The phenomenal advance of Palestine in government, agriculture, education, and health, due to the assistance of the British Government, and the Zionist World Movement, was graphically depicted by the deputy general manager of the Sinai, Palestine, and Hedjaz Railway (Lieut.-Colonel Campegli) at a luncheon tendered him at Atizac House in Melbourne a few days ago. “In 1920 a Civil Government similar to that of Crown colonics, was introduced, but there were no Houses of Parliament,” he said. “The development during the last six years was unequalled elsewhere, and at least £lO,000,000 had been invested in Jewish capital. "A great harbour is being built at Joffa, and the British and French Governments propose building a railway between Syria and Palestine,” he said. “Palestine will then link up Europe, Asia, and Africa. There is a prospect of quick communication ’ being established between England and Palestine. The Jordan River is being harnessed to provide a water supply, and an abundant supply of cheap hydroelectric energy. Modern methods in agriculture had produced a large barley cropland 2,000,000 cases of oranges were ready for export. There were possibilities of a large sugar factory being established if present intentions of cultivating sugarcane, near the Jordan were adhered to. The Department of Health had now’ successfully' attacked malaria. Palestine under British rule had a splendid future.
