INTERVIEWED IN PARIS
MR. COATES ON DOMINION’S ATTITUDE TO LOCARNO (Rec. December 20, 5.5 p.m.) Paris, December 23. Mr. Coates, in an interview, expressed pleasure with his trip to France. Questioned regarding New Zealand’s attitude to Locarno Mr. Coates recalled the Dominion Premiers’ joint motion at the Imperial Conference congratulating the British Government on its efforts to secure an agreement. He added that New Zealand put the Empire first, as she was grateful to the Motherland for her assistance during her infancy. She was assuming wider responsibilities, but did not forget her debt of gratitude. New Zealand’s policy in the past had been to seek all the facts to enable her to judge the position. If the. Motherland found herself obliged to honour a pledge or found herself endangered, New Zealand would again be found assisting her.
MR. COATES RETURNS TO LONDON (Rec. December 26, 5.5 p.m.) Paris, December 23. Mr. Coates placed a wreath on the Unknown Soldiers’ grave, had lunch at the British EmM; assy, and departed for London.
