NEW ZEALAND FILMS FOR AMERICA
AN lAIPORTANT ARRANGEMENT. An interesting gathering took place yesterday, when a luncheon was tendered to Air. N. B. Freeman, managing director for Australia of Metro-Goldwyn-Alayer, Ltd. The Alayor (Air. C. J. B. Norwood) presided, and the Government was represented bv the Hon. G. J. Anderson (Alinister-in-Charge of Publicity), and the Hon. R. F. Bollard (Alinister of Internal Affairs). Among others present were Air. Joliffe (censor of kinematograph films), Mr. A. H. Alessenger (Government publicity officer), Air. Barrie Alarschel (New Zealand manager for Aletro-Gold-wyn-Mayer, Ltd.), and representatives of the leading picture theatre interests of the city. Air. Freeman, in reply to various speeches, stated that the speakers that day had mentioned something of the problem and triangle type of picture as being obnoxious to the great majority of theatregoers, and he could assure those present that a definite change would be made in that direction shortly by the big film producers of America. Air. Freeman paid a tribute to the splendid quality of the New Zealand Government publicity films, which he stated wer e now the outstanding feature of many programmes in Australia. In connection with these films it was his pleasant duty to be able to announce to the Hon. Air. Anderson that a cablegram had just been received from his corporation’s headquarters in New York to the effect that New Zealand Government publicity films had been accepted for displav in all the leading theatres of the United States. This included the world’s largest theatre’ in New York. The effect of this would be to bring before millions of Americans something of the daily life and scenic beauty of New Zealand. These pictures would be screened weekly, and should prove the finest possible advertisement for the Dominion. The negatives would be sent to New York, where the Aletro-Goldwyn-Aleye’-, Ltd., would bear the complete cost of printing the required number of copies for the States. A number of Canadian theatres would also be included in the circuit.
