Wright being second with 8 P oln ' !,< At the. second concert of the Dannevirke Orchestral Society the soloists were Mrs. C. Mercer, contralto, and Mr. Len Barnes from Wellington. At the conclusion’of the copcert a social gathering, arranged by the Mayoress (Mrs. Runciman), was held, when Mr. A. Lawson, conductor, was presented by Miss F. Jlc.cGibbon, leader of the first violins, with a silver cigarette case as a mark of appreciation of the service he had rendered to the musical talent of the town. , . , c Playing against a combined team from T’ahiatna. and Woodville, Dannevirke Lawn Tennis Club achieved a distinct success, being the winners by 30 matches to 9. The games were played on the Dannevirke Club’s lawns, those representing the visitors being Mesdames Druce and Purdie, Misses Arm i stem , Smith, Irving, Junker. Chatwin 0 Sullivan, Horne and Wardrop Messrs. Swainson, Bracey, Druce, Wilson, Gregory, Mackie, Smith, Graham. Bolton and O’Sullivan. Dannevirke players were: Mesdames N. P. Green, Cowper, D. Fraser. F. Baker. Misses Morrison, Tyson, McPherson, Blakiston. Foreman and Chadwick, Messrs. N. P. Green, Gicsen, Shirley, Jenson. Edmonds, Chadwick, Cowper and Fraser. The presentation of prizes to Dannevirke High School pupils took place in the Town Hall this year in the presence of a large attendance of parents and others interested. Mr. T. IT. G. Lloyd, chairman of the High School Board of. Governors, presided, and Mrs. E. A. Ransom. handed the prizes to the winners. The dux of the school this rear appeared in P. H. Meakin. who f.lso gained. firsts in English. Latin, French nnd mathematics, and seconds in science and history. Runner-un was R. B. Schulze, who gained the Old Pupils’ Association prize and was first in science and history, and second in mathematics and English, lie also received a special laboratory prize. The A. F. Patterson Memorial prize was won by Emily Falconer for Latin, and the chairman's prizes for common-sense nnd industry were awarded to R. B. Schulze and Finilv Falcon? l .
