THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By

“The Watcher.”)

Fresco will be racing at Awapuni and is to be' ridden in his engagements by S. Wilson. Degage is working quite soundly again and her preparation, which is fairly well forward, is to be continued. J. Beale will be riding at Awapuni on Boxing Day, but will also do the last three days at Ellerslie, where he will be on Haze, Agrion and Eulalie. It is possible this year for the jockeys to do Auckland and Manaviatu meetings by missing only Boxing Day at one fixture. The two-year-old Royal Ceres was sent to Ellerslie yesterday. F. Davis had five horses on the special horse train for Auckland yesterday, Oreum, Auratum, Gascony, Mag-, ua Charta and Doree. The seven Riccarton horses for Ellerslie arrived yesterday and joined the train for Auckland. Haze looks well and may be able to break his exasperating sequence of defeats before long. R. J. Mason stated that his two-year-olds had improved since the New Zealand Cup meeting.

Prior to being shipped to Wellington on Thursday Count Cavour and Battlement galloped six furlongs together in Ijniu. 17 2-ssec. Count Cavour is in first-class order, while Battlement looks well. Good judges in the south do not place undue importance on his defeat at the South Canterbury meettug. He has not yet shown really good class form, but he has demonstrated bis staying ability and should race well at Ellerslie. F D. Jones is confident Battlement will run well in the Auckland Cup.

J. H. Jefferd joined the special horse train at Palmerston North yesterday with five horses, which would probably be Rapine, Star Stranger, Mimetic, Decov Bird and the two-year-old Expense or Joy King. S. Waddell took two horses, those of his engaged being Shirlev, Father O’Flynn, Rascal and Beacoii Light. Shirley and Rascal woulu be the likely pair taken. The hurdler Carawock, who was accepted for at Awapuni, was amongst the horses sent to Auckland yesterday.

Mr. W. G. Stead sent four horses to Auckland yesterday, High Pitch, Cimabue, Cosmetic and Laity. Cimabue has gope on well since he won’ the C.J.C. Welcome Stakes and although the opposition at Ellerslie promises, with so many improving youngsters making the trip, to be the most formidable he has yet encountered, he must be granted the palm until they can wrest it from him.

|. M. Cameron took The Hawk to Ellerslie yesterday The Hawk has done exceptionally well since he raced last, and has shown something like Ins old form on the tracks. He may prove the most dangerous of the topweights in the Railway Handicap. Mr. R. A. McKenzie’s two Cup candidates Piuthair and Clarinda were railed north yesterday to fulfil their engagements. With their light imposts both these mares should take a lot of shaking off over the two miles m the Auckland Cup. T- . Green having taken the mount on Piuthair, it would seem that most reliance is to be placed on her in the contest.

Commendation, who has been at Woodville with Chelome and Many Colours since the recent meeting, was taken to Auckland by G. Jones yesterday. Commendation has done all that has been asked of him in a most satisfactory manner since he raced last. Grand Knight, Nadanno, Panther, Gauntlet, Tanadees and Laughing Prince comprised the Trentham contingent for Auckland yesterday. W Rayner’s team, F. Tilley with Man'dane' Limited, and Ruanui, Lady Cavendish, and Alloway joined the special horse train at Marton yesterday. The hurdler Maunga, who lias not raced since the spring meeting at Trentham, was taken to Ellerslie by J. Griffith yesterday. Two years ago at the summer meeting in Auckland Maunga raced exceptionally well, being third, second, and first in three starts over the hurdles. • Advices from Hastings record the death a few days ago of jockey A. Stowe, a member of the well-known family of that name, who did most of his riding for Mr. C. F. Vallance. Centrepiece galloped a mile and a quarter at Riccarton on Thursday morning in 2min. 12 2-ssec. It was a useful effort, as he was unaccompanied for the first six furlongs, owing to Card Trick failing to go off with him. Green Cloth joined in for the last half-mile Centrepiece will race at the Dunedin meeting and he should pay his way on the trip. He shapes like staying a mile and a nuarter Front Rank, Dark Spot, and Scrambler will accompany Centrepiece to Wingatui. Glentruin went well while sprinting half a mile on Thursday, with a mate, in 50 l-ssec. The imported mare will be brought north by F. C. Porter next Thursdav, to compete in the Palmerston North Stakes. Precious and Nincompoop were to have worked together over half a mile on Thursdav, but the former broke awav and the pair sprinted by themselves. Precious looks in nice order and she mav pay her way at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. Nincompoop will go to the West Coast with Saxette as a mate. G. "Murray Ayiislev gave Footfall and Papercliase easv pacing on the sand on the morning prior to leaving for Auckland. They have trained on well during the last few weeks. Footfall has no public form to recommend him for two miles, but his trainer is hopeful that lie will run a good race in the Auckland Cup. Even if he fails there, however, he should pav his way in other races on the trio. Paperchase showed useful form at the South Cantcrburv meeting, and her Auckland prospects look bright. She has a lot of speed and she should be capable of running out a mile. A. Wormaid will take Radiac and Frivolous south for the holidav racing. They will start at the Dunedin meeting, and they may go on to Wvndham and Invercargill, with Waikonaiti as an alternative programme. Kin< T Abbey, from the same stable, will be raced over hurdles at the West Coast meetings.

At Riccnrton on Thursday morning Rapier and Taboo went well in a spin over seven furlongs, petting through their task in Imiti. 31 2-ssec. Rapier should race well at the Mnnawatu and Marton niceings, while Taboo may do the West Coast circuit. Wherever he races he should pav his way. Chickwheat and the two-venr-old lericho were to have sprinted half a mile, but the gallon was spoilt through the former breaking awnv and having to be eased while Jericho overhauled him. Chickwheat will acconinanv Ranier north while Jericho will do his liolidav racing at the Dunedin meeting. Fresco r-ct through useful work over about a mile He is verv well and he reouires onlv average hick to nav his wav during the holidays His stable mates Oriflnmb and Ascetic, will do the West Const circuit. Assurance reeled off half a mile in 50 l-ssec.. and did it verv nicelv He is booked for the Manawafn meeting, and he onlv has to show his true form to pay his way in hackraces.
