MAORIS WIN AGAIN

DEFEAT FRENCH TEAM AT PAU MATCH’ STRENUOUSLY CONTESTED (Rec. December 17, 7.35 p.in.) Paris, December 16. The Maori Rugby team beat the Frenchmen in a match at I’au by three tries, one converted, to a try and a penalty goal. The French side was drawn from the Bearn, Armagnac, and Bigorre Clubs. The weather v/as delightful. and there was a huge crowd of spectators present. The Maoris lost no time in attacking, S. Gemmell opening the score with a try, which he converted. Piqueral retaliated with a magnificent penalty goal from beyond half-way. A fierce forward battle ensued, till eventually Barclay broke away and secured a try, which was not converted. The half-time figutis read: Maoris 8, Frenchmen 3. The second spell was strenuously con tested. The Frenchmen went off at; a great rate, and temporarily held the upper hand, the Maoris being on vno occasion forced down. The home side continued to press vigorously, till Taillantou cut through, and passed to Rechede, who Scored a try, which was not converted. The French defence now badly bungled, letting the Maoris m to score a try beneath the posts but the kick at goal was abortive. The French had a chance of reducing the deficit through a free-kick, but failed and the "aire ended: Maoris 11. Frenchmen 6. ” The Maoris deserved their victory owing to the superiority in speed of the forwards, and their better, combination. The Frenchmen were rather scrappy, but nevertheless fought hard, and did not relax their efforts.
