FIRST BISHOP OF WAIKATO
ARCHDEACON CHERRINGTON ENTHRONED By Telegraph.- paEss association. Hamilton, December 11. In ceremonies invested with majestic dignity, the Ven. Archdeacon Cecil Arthur Cherrington, 8.D., was consecrated and enthroned as the first Bishop of Waikato at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral, Hamilton, to-day. The occasion was one of the most important ecclesiastical assemblages seen in the Dominion for some time, and large crowds attended. The church was filled before the commencement of the service, and those unable to gain admittance participated from outside, the service being broadcasted by a loud speaker. The processions of clergv provided unusual spectacles, and, as they filed to the church in their robes, they created an impression of solemn dignity and deep significance. There were great numbers of visiting clergv from all parts of the Dominion, Archbishop Averill and five other bishops being present. Archdeacon Mac Murray, of Auckland, delivered the sermon at the consecration in the 'morning and the new Bishop preached after his enthronement to-night. There was a general feeling of sadness that his wife, who had shared his joys and hardships, should be cut off from this life when her husband had reached the great attainment. St. Peter’s is now designated a cathedral, though the church is designated incomplete, and a campaign will be launched for funds to finish the work.
