His faith and leadership helped to sustain his people through the Great War, when Serbia was twice invaded and finally conquered by the Austrians and Bulgarians. An old man of over 70, he crossed the mountains of Albania, on foot in the great retreat of the decimated Serbian army during-the bitter cold of the winter of 1915, to return again in the winter of 1918, and at the Peace Conference helped to mould the greater Jttgo-Slavia.]
