BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY
Another delightful concert was field at the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society on Thursday the rooms being filled with men from the various ships in port. The programme was arranged by the Pononga. Tennis Club, of Petone, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience. The party was introduced by the society’s port missioner, Mr. N. S. Slyfield, who with a few well-chosen words spoke of the aims and objects of this branch of the society. Each item was greeted with applause, the perform ers having to respond with numerous encores. Supper was served during the interval, and full justice was done to it. A vote of thanks was proposed bjthe chairman of the entertainment committee, who expressed the hope that the party would give another of their enjoyable evenings. This was carried with acclamation and cheers by the men present. The chairman for the evening, Mr. R. Usmar, replied, saying that the party would be delighted to come whenever the society required them. Two of the items that were of special mention were tho “Oratorio.’’ by the company, and the farcical sketch, entitled "The Obstructive Hat,” the latter causing a great deal of amusement. Items were contributed bv the following:—Misses E. Birrell, G. Vsmar, E. McLeod, Lomas, Walker, N. Walker, and Huggins, Messrs. A. Leibzeit, and R. Usmar. On Wednesday the usual mid-week social evening was held, a- 'large number of men being present. Songs, games, and instrumental items were indulged in. Supper was served bv the voting ladies of tho society, and a very pleasant time spent until 10.45 p.m. _______
