THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”) Nominations for the annual meeting of the Stratford Racing Club, to be held on January 1 and 3, will close on Thursday at 9 p.m. The Stratford telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. Nominations for the summer meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club on January 1 and 3 will close on Friday at 8 p.m. The Featherston telegraph office closes at 5 p.m. Special train arrangements have been made for the Woodville races on Wednesday and Thursday from Palmerston North, Masterton, and Waipukurau, including excursion fares. Nominations for the summer meeting of the Waipukurau Jockey Club will close to-night at 8 o’clock. Mr. Vivian Riddiford, who has been on a trip to Europe, is due to arrive in Wellington on Sunday next by the Mataroa. Grand Knight will not be a starter in the Auckland Cup, but unless plans are altered he will be at the meeting, accompanied by Panther and Nadarino Westbroke, formsrly raced by Mr. C. E. Elgar, is the latest addition to Captain Gage Williams’s team at Trentham Degage is a notable entry for events at Christmas time. She went wrong on .the eve of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting, and also was compelled to miss important engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Judging by the tenderness she displayed after a gallop at Trentham on Saturday morning it is doubtful if she will be able to race during the holidays, or be at her best if she does. A. Goodman is due to leave Trentham for Woodville with five horses. Gauntlet, who has now won twice in succession over hurdles, is to race at the Auckland summer. meeting. He will accompany S. Reid’s team, and be in charge of that trainer, while H. Lorigan is at Awapuni with Orchid. D. McCaulev will do the West Coast (South Island) trip during the holidays with Tokioi, Sasham, and Silver Tray. Silver Tray has been left in the Great Northern Derby by mistake. Star Ranger has been galloping well at Trentham, and he will make the trip to Auckland for the Cup. J. W. Lowe will take him to Te Awamutu to-morrow for the principal handicap to be run there on Saturday. Both Star Ranger and Tanadees have been working the reverse way in company at Trentham. Battlement’s weight in the Auckland Cup, 7.2, is 71b. below weight-for-age, riot 71b. above, as was inadvertently stated in Saturday’s issue. Rapier has improved a great deal since winning on the last day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, and if brought north should pay his way. Set Sail is being trained over extended distances at Invercargill, and has been getting through her tasks well. There appears no reason why the Solferino mare should not be as successful in middle distance handicaps as she has been in sprint events. Precious was not long in making a return for her new owner, Mr. J. McCormack, winning at her first start at Methven on Saturday. Precious and Nincompoop will add interest to the holiday racing at Awapuni Glentruin returned to Riccarton after contesting the Feilding Stakes. She will not go to Auckland, but if she goes on all right in the interval she will be'rating at Awapuni in the Palmerston North Stakes. Glentruin is not the mare she once was, but with any luck at all she would, have been much more prominent at Feilding last week. Footfall, who has 7.7 in the Auckland Cup, is regarded in Christchurch as favourably handicapped. . It is by no means certain that he will run in the Cup, as he claims a minor engagement on the same day. He has gone on well in his preparation since the New Zealand Cup meeting. ■ The Riccarton pair Fresco and Rapier, who claim engagements at Awapuni, have also been entered for events at Dunedin during Christmas week. No doubt handicaps will be a deciding factor upon which trip they will make. Kilfaire is being schooled over hurdles in the south. The well-known mare Bonetter died last week. She was at Otatara to visit Cape Horn, but died after foaling to Hymestra, and the foal also died. Bonetter was a very serviceable mare on the racing track, and it is bad luck for Mr. Kemball to lose her on the threshold of her stud career. The followiner are the correct weights in the Flving Hack Handicap at Woodville (six furlongs) :—

Other corrections are: Royal Damon has 8.9 in the Oreti Handicap and 9.5 in the Borough Handicap. Tn the Whariti Handicap General Wai has 8.9.

It is interesting to note that a halfsister to Mr. T. H. Lowry’s well-per-formed imported horse Grandcourt (Captivation—La Hunpe), who is now doine stud duty at Okawa, won a "ouple of races in England recently. The half-sister referred to is Deneb, who followed up her Chepstow success by winning the Trent Selling Nursery nt Nottingham. When auctioned after the race she was sold for £SOO to Maior IT. Cavzer, who saw good stud value in her after her racing days are over Kohara, 12yds., appearing in Satur-

day’s acceptances for the Sharpe Handicap at Hutt Park on Wednesday, should be Hohora. TAUMARANUI MEETING CUP TO MISS VERA BY TELEGBAPH.—P&ESS ASSOCIATION. Taumaranui, December 4.
