DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION

REFERENCE TO PENDING RETIREMENT. Reference to the impending retirement of the Director of Education, Air. J. Caugliley, was made at the breakingup ceremony of the Wellington training College" yesterday. Air. W. H. Gould, principal of the college, mentioned that it was the last occasion Air. Caugliley would be present as Director of Education, as he was retiring shortly and. taking a wellearned holiday. lie expressed the appreciation of the students regarding the kindly wav in which Air. Caughley had at all times treated them. His pending retirement was regretted by all, and thev wished him every happiness. Air. T. Forsyth, chairman of the board, endorsed Air. Gould’s remarks. Air. Caughlev’s work for the cause of education, and especially for the improvement of the conditions of the teachers, had been invaluable. On behalf of the board he wished him a long and happy life. - . , ~ Sir John Luke associated himself with the wishes expressed towards Mr. Caugliley, and said that he very much regretted he was leaving the service. Air. Caughley, in reply, mentioned that his approaching holiday would be the first lengthv one he had had in ten vears He thanked them most heartily for their kind wishes. Nothing gave him more gratification than to know that he carried with him into retirement the good-will of the teachers and studthe Training College, and pf the members of the Education Board. Reference had been made to the fact that the Training College had been established some 20 years ago. He could hardlv realise that it was so far back; it covered one-half of his teaching service, as he had been a member of the. staff of the Normal School in April 1906. Enormous advances had been made in connection with the Training College since them, and he was encouraged to believe that the progress would not stop. e Three cheers were given by the students for Air. Caughley.
