TRENTHAM SCHOLARSHIPS

BURSARIES FOR 1926. A meeting of the executive of the Trentham Scholarship Fund was held recently, when the following members were present: Mr. S. Kirkcaldie (chairman), Major-General R. Young, Colonel H. R. Potter, Sir A. F. Roberts, Major Forgie, Messrs. W. Appleton, J. Caughley, M. J. Reardon, and G. A. Troup. Apologies were received from the Chief Justice (Hon. C. P. Skerrett) and Dr E Marsden. Bursaries were awarded to 198 applicants, representing 134 renewals and 64 new awards. It was stated that the total amount to be disbursed during the vear was £4432 10s., or an average of £22 7s. Bd. per head. The total amount available annually from the fund proper, covering P rltl ' cipal anl interest, over a period of 20 years, was £2840 10s. The amount awarded was £1593 in excess of the amount available, but it had been possible to meet all claims on account of the geneous assistance of the Canteen and Regimental Trust Fund Board, which had allotted a sum not exceeding £2OOO per annum for the purposes of Trentham bursaries.

A close scrutinv of the work done bv the bursars during the vear was undertaken by the Education Department and disclosed a highlv satisfactory s f of affairs. Tn everv case it appeared that the assistance granted bad been taken full advantage of by the bursars
