SUNDAY SCHOOL UNION
SUCCESSFUL RALLY There was a large attendance at the Wellington Sunday School Union’s rally in the Town Hall on Tuesday. The president (Mr. W. E. Howe) said it was a fact that in Wellington many people did not know there was such a thing as. the Sunday School Union, which was established in 1880, and was to meet every month with a view to interchanging ideas. _ There . were some Sunday schools in Wellington which thought that they were just perfect and did not need the help that the union could give them. He would be glad to welcome representatives of these at the meetings so that they, too, might learn how to become perfect. Mr. Howe then paid a tribute to the work of the secretary, Mr. 11. .J. Thompson, who has held that position for 27 years; also to the vice-president, Mr. Alexander Johnston, who had been with the union for about thirty years, and to whom they owed a great debt of gratitude. Mr. Howe mentioned that in the citv and suburbs there were hundreds of ’boys and girls who never attended Sunday school. In fact some years ago it had been said that there were no fewer than seven thousand children in the city between the ages of 6 and 14 who never entered the Jjouse of God. Again, there were in the backblocks hundreds, perhaps thousands, who did not attend. In one school he had visited the whole of the eleven children there knew nothing of the Scriptures, and of such children he could’ tell stories that would wring one’s heart. . The. report stated that the Wellington Sundav School Union embraced 97 schools, with 1202 officers and teachers and 10,287 scholars, including, schools formed bv the extension organiser. In the Scripture examination tin’s year there were 559 candidates, of whom 216 gained prizes, and 290 certificates. The setting of the question papers and the awarding of marks were most efficientlv undertaken bv Miss M. A. Sinclair, 8.A., Miss Oldfield, Miss MacKenzie, Mr.' J. B. Hopkirk, and Mr. J.
