UPKEEP OF THE ROADS

WHO SHOULD BEAR THE BURDEN? A suggestion that the extra half million pounds received as revenue by the Government from the increased motor tariff, should bo spent on road improvements was made by Mr. W. S. Wilson, at the annual meeting, last night, of the Wellington Automobile Club. Mr. L. A. Edwards said that to spend the money would be an acknowledgment by the motorists that that taxation was necessary for the upkeep of the roads, and that the burden should be borne by the motorists. That would he absolutely unnecessary if local bodies did their full share in the upkeep of the roads.
