TRENTHAM RACES

BEACON LIGHT WINS CHAMPION PLATE PEARCE HANDICAP TO PIUTHAIR SHIRLEY A BRILLIANT SPRINTER (By “The Watcher.”) The spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was concluded at Trentham yesterday in fine weather. A strong northerly wind made matters unpleasant early in the afternoon but it dropped after about the third race and conditions afterwards were good. The Champion Plate was won unexpectedly by Beacon Light, who reversed his first day’s form completely, and beat Seatown and Te Monanui. The Pearce Handicap was won by Piuthair from Avola and Modem, and in the sprint event Shirley showed great brilliancy and scored by a narrow margin from Royal Damon, with Merry Jest third. There 'was a large holiday crowd present, but the totalisator return for the day was only slighly ahead of Labour Day last year.

Beacon Light’s win was a regular facer for the general run of backers. He had faded out of the contest for the Wellington Handicap on Saturday after covering only seven furlongs, and it was hardly to be expected, good class horse though he is, that he would improve sufilcientlv to beat a strong field so decisively at weight-for-age. His win met with a mixed reception. Seatown proved himself again as a good three-year-old. He got the worst of the dispatch, but was taken to the front entering the straight, and only went down to a good horse. The favourite, Te Monanui, was finishing on very strongly. Beacon Light does not incur liability for further rehandicap for the New Zealand Cup as the result of yesterday’s victory. After the race the winner was paraded on the lawn in front of the main stand, and the Hon. C. P. Skerrett, formerly vice-president of the club, presented the gold cup to the owner, Mr. W. T. Hazlett. The best finish of the meeting was produced bv the handicapper in the Roseneath Handicap for two-year-olds. The first four horses went across the line with little more than inches between them. Ti Tree, who was the favourite, was unlucky, as she failed to get away on terms with the field, and was finishing strongly. At the same time, the win of Arrow Lad was form, as he ran a good race from the back the first dav. Yesterday he was always near the front. The Pearce Handicap was chiefly notable for the failure of the favourite, Indian Sage. He moved short in his preliminary, and was never dangerous at any stage of the contest. Piuthair scored nicelv after having the luck to get up on the rails from Avola, who ran nearer her true form than on the first day, easilv reversing positions with Diogenes with 131 b. advantage in the handicap, as compared with the first dav.

Shirley was -brilliant in the Naipai Handicap. From first to last her colours were always in the van. She was winning nicely a hundred yards from home, but Royal Damon came at her so strongly that she had to extend herself to win by a small margin. They were clear of the field, and in a halfhearted race for third money Merry Jest got the honour from Inferno, who ran quite a fair race Le Choucas, the favourite, was never dangerous, but Mireiisonta and Anthonie showed up well till a furlong from home, when they retired. Centrepiece again ran a creditable race, coming on strongly at the finish.

A good performance was witnessed in the Tararua Handicap, a mile race for hacks. Outfit led the field at a good pace, and was so clear at the distance that he looked unbeatable. Here Queen’s Choice, who had dropped back to tlie rear of the field at the half mile, came along with a paralysing run and scored comfortably. Only a good horse and only a good rider could have won from the position he was in three furlongs from home. Queen’s Choice, who is a three-year-old halfbrother to Chudic, an Easter Handicap winner, now has a record of three starts three wins this season. He is engaged in classic events in the near future, and should hold his own. The time of the race was'only half a second slower than that for the open mile, which had the added advantage of being run when the wind had dropped. There was a very large attendance, the train and motor- traffic being very heavy. The totalisator turnover, however, just held its own as compared with last Labour Day, being £72,332, as against £72,284 10s. an increase of £47 10s. The total for the two davs was £120,381, as compared with £119,070 for the last spring meeting, an increase of £l3ll. As the general tenl-

ency at present is to a decrease in turnover, the club is fortunate to conclude such a successful gathering with an increase and fortunate also to experience favourable weather. An inquiry was held concernin;’ interference in the Second Hurdle Handicap. After the evidence of the riders of Star Shell and Lady Passenger had been heard, and from their own observations of the race, the stewards found that the interference did not, in their opinion, affect the result of the race, and it was therefore decided not to alter the judge’s placings. It was resolved to administer a severe warning to Stratton, rider of Star Shell, for careless riding.

SECOND HURDLE HANDICAP. Carawock was a slightly better favourite for the Second Hurdle Handicap than Star Shell. Koauau was the best backed of the others. Through the straight the order was Lady Passenger, Gauntlet, Star Shell, Carawock, and Te Maire. Entering the back stretch Siar Shell took the lead from Ladv Passenger and Gauntlet. Te Maire heading the bunch. At the five furlongs post Star Shell led with Ladv Passenger from Gauntlet, Te Maire, and Radiac. Crossing the top the order was Star Shell, Lady Passenger, Gauntlet, and Te Maire. Koauau moved up approaching the straight, where Star Shell led from Lady’ Passenger, Gauntlet, and Radiac. Star Shell and Lady Passenger both hit hard at the last fence through interference, and nearly fell, but recovered, and Star Shell came on to beat Ladv Passenger by a length, with Radiac two lengths away third, a neck in front of Gauntlet. There was a gap to Carawock, Maunga, and Te Maire. SPRING TRIAL STAKES. Resinous was a firm favourite for the Trial Stakes, solid support being accorded Haze. Tholomon and Royal Picture were the best backed of the others. Roval Picture was left at the post, Bronstell showing out from the start from Jemidar, Resinous, Welkne, and Cerf. This was the order down the back. Welkne took charge at the top from Bronstell, Jemidar, Cerf, Haze, and Vesperus, Resinous dropping back. There were quick changes turning into the straight, Welkne dropping back from the lead, Haze, Tholomon, and Green Cloth in close order leading from Jemidar and Vesperus. Haze appeared to be winning at the distance, where Vesperus came along with a strong challenge, and, going on, won by a length from Haze, who was a length and a half clear of No Favours. General Wai and Jemidar wete only heads away, and then came Tholomon and Cerf. TARARUA HANDICAP. Queen's Choice was favourite for the Tararua Handicap, nearly twice as well backed as Black Duke, who was closely followed by Our Jack. Sovena was the best backed of the others. Inoe showed out at the start, followed by Gardant, Outfit, and Black Duke. Down the back, Outfit was in charge from Sovena, Gardant, Black Duke, and Lin Arlington. Crossing the top Outfit, Rascal, and Sovena were the leaders, with Gardant and Black Duke dropping back. Outfit ran into the straight from Gardant, Sovena, Rascal, and Lin Arlington, and was clear at the distance, where Queen’s Choice came through on the inside, and with a brilliant run cut Outfit down to win by a length. - Gardant was three lengths away, with Our Jack, followed by’ Rascal, Catcall, Sovena, and Lin Arlington. R. Reed rode a splendidly judged race on the winner, who lost a handy position at the five-furlong post. ROSENEATH HANDICAP. Ti Tree was a solid favourite for the two-year-old handicap, the best backed of the others being Arrow Lad and Frenzied Finance. Tom Bracken, Frenzied Finance, and Arrow Lad began best, and running for the straight the order was Tom Bracken, Frenzied Finance, Polydectes, and Arrow Lad. Once in line, Merry Mint joined the leaders, and in a slashing finish Arrow Lad prevailed by a nose from Merry Mint, who was only a head in front of Tom Bracken and Ti Tree in line, and then came Mandy, Frenzied Finance, Marsurd, Cosmetic, and Oscillation. T Tree failed to jump out well and this cost her the race. PEARCE HANDICAP. Indian Sqge was a firm favourite for the Pearce Handicap, some £7OO ahead of Diogenes, who was very evenly backed with Hipo, Piuthair, and Avola. Alyson showed out from the start, closely followed by Piuthair, Avola, Diogenes and Hipo, with Mali Jong last. At the five furlong post, Alyson was still leading from Piuthair, Avola, Modern, Hipo, Indian Sage and Diogenes. Crossing the top, Avola and P.iuthair were together from Modern, and Alyson. Avola led into the straight from Piuthair, Modem and Hipo. Avola came on and looked the winner .until Piuthair showed up on the rails and took the race by a long neck. Modern being a length away, with Hipo a similar distance behind. Indian Sage, Alyson and Diogenes were the next to finish. CHAMPION PLATE. Te Monanui was a hot favourite for the Champion Plate, The Hawk being a good second favourite from Seatown and Grand Knight. Seatown got away badly. Phaola led Rouex out of the straight, followed by Hyanna and The Hawk, all closely bunched. Down the back, Hyanna went to the front from Rouex, followed by Phaola, Te Monanui, Grand Knight, and Beacon Light. At the five furlongs. Hyanna took charge from Rouex, Phaola, and Seatown. At the half mile, _ Hyanna and Scatown were together in front of

Rouex and Phaola. Hyanua and Seatown led into the straight from Phaola and Rouex, with Beacon Light coming up fast on the outside. Once in line, Seatown shot to the front, but Beacon Light came along with a well sustained run and won ..going ’ away by a length from Seatown, who was only a head in front of Te Monanui. Ilynsnna was four lengths back and then came Phaola, Rouex, The Hawk, and Grand Knight. NAINAI HANDICAP. Le Choucas was a firm favourite for the sprint, nearly £7OO ahead of Merry Jest, then came Mireusonta, Shirley, and Licinius very evenly backed. Merry Jest, Shirley, and Black Cat showed out at the start, but Merry Jest soon fell back, and, running on to the couise proper Shirley led from Mireusonta, Black Cat, and Royal Damon. Royal Damon came at Shirley very strongly over the last bit, and they drew out from the field, Shirley prevailing by a short head. Merry Jest came on again and took third money, four lengths off from Inferno, with Centrepiece, Nadarino, Epistle, and Gold Box next. . First and second horses paid exactly the same dividend. RUAHINE HANDICAPBallymoy II was a hot favourite for the concluding event, more than twice as well backed as Black Mint and Lucky Days, solid support also going to Gourmet and Imitation. The Bolter, Note, Volplane, and Ballymoy 11. were early prominent. Note led on to the course proper from The Bolter, Volplane, and Ballymoy 11. Once in line, Note was challenged by Black Mint, Volplane, and Gourmet. Black Mint came on to win by a length from Gourmet, who was one and a half lengths ahead of Volplane. Note Was fourth and then came Lucky Days, Lady Ideal, Ballymoy 11, and Imitation. The weight stopped the favourite . P. D. Adlam, rider of Bonogne in the Brewer Handicap, was suspended for the rest of the day for careless riding. NOTES ON THE RACING Dominion Special. Wanganui, October 25. Raukura, the warm favourite for the Trial Handicap, duly won, but he was hard pressed for a time by Rising Star. Airtight, the second favourite, was first away, soon to be displaced by Raukura. The order into the straight was Raukura, Bloey, Rising Star, Manly, Takini, Lady Acre, and Airtight, and in the run home Raukura won br a length from Rising Star, with a rank outsider in Lethal a similar distance away tlurd. Then came Manly, Takini, Airtight, and Rillett in a line.

There were only five runners in the Brewer Handicap, and Pouma was a good favourite, £27 more being invested on her than on Kiosk. The favourite, Kiosk, Lady Bentinck, and Shut Eye was the order along the back, and at the lialf-mile Kiosk had his neck in front of Pouma. The latter led to the straight from Kiosk, Lady Bentick, and Bonogne, and in the run home Bonogne did best, beating Lady Bentick by half a length, with Kiosk two and a half lengths away third. Pouma, who was next, was badly interfered with at the half distance by Bonogne, although she was already beaten. The winner tan a bad last the first day. Bonogne’s rider (P. _ Adlam) was suspended for the remainder of the dav.

Halgina, making his first appearance over sticks, was favourite in the Hack Hurdles, but betting took a wide range, both Kareao and Tawehi being at good prices. Gold Peak made nearly all the running, but as they came to the straight the second time Kareao and Halgina were together, followed by Sea View, Ratapiko, and Tawehi. The favourite stopped quickly from the last hurdle, and Ratapiko and then Tawehi joined issue with Kareao in a slashing finish. Tawehi won by a head from Ratapiko with Kareao a neck away. Sea View was fourth, and Halgina and Gold Peak next. Another five horse field contested the Wilson Hacfi High-weight, No Response and Lady Anstruther carrvingj the bulk of the investments. Anolo Blue Peter, and Lady Anstruther were prominent at the start, with Blue Peter taking up the running at the five furlongs. The order into the straight was Blue Peter, Lady Anstruther, No Response, and Gold Collector, and in the run to the judge Lady Anstruther won from Blue Peter by a length, with Anolo three lengths away, and No Response fourth.

Of the eleven runners in the Waverley Cup backers showed a preference for Yoma over Euphonium, £lOl separating them. Glengariff was the early leader from Yoma, Star Area, Novar, Kilia, Alaric, and Shining Armour, but at the « half mile Alaric was making play from Shining Armour, Sunshot, Yoma, and Captain Gazeley. Glengariff was fourth, and Shining Armour, Kilia, Sunshot, Crossfire, and Yoma next to finish.

Bank Note was again entrusted with big money in the Flying Hack, but again he' let his supporters down. Royal Elm, Bank Note, Gram! Lupin, Pop Off, Tip Tree, and Lucernal was the order from the barrier, and at the half-mile post Grand Lupin was in charge, leading to the straight from rlying Shot, Bank Note, Tip Tree, Bent, Royal Elm, and Pop Off. Closefire was five lengths away, with Subjection and Empire Camp next. A dozen came out for the Jackson Hack Handicap, Erin-go-Bragh being made favourite. When they had gone a furlong the order w T as Argue, Erin-go-Bragh, Quillfire, Skypoint, and White Ringlet, and there was no change to the straight. A great finish resulted in Quillfire, Argue, and Skypoint going over the line almost on terms, the first two dead-heating, with Skypoint a neck awav, and a length in front of Molto and White Ringlet. Quillfire paid a false price. WAIKATO HUNT MEETING HAZELBURN’S DOUBLE WIN BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION. Hamilton, October 25. LIMERICK’S BAD LUCK BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIA1 I".' Melbourne, October 25. A loud and prolonged outcry was raised during the running of the W. S. Cox Plate at ..the Moo”ec Valley races, when Limerick was suddenly knocked back several lengths. At the subsequent inquiry Green, the rider ot Limerick, stated that his mount went to the front at the start, although the jockey did his best to check him. Going along the back stretch Metellus ran tip to him and was just a little ahead when Limerick swerved out and struck Metellus. Limerick, being the lighter of the two horses, came off worst and fell ;ack. Heroic had been three lengths

behind the pair, but Cairns dashed Heroic out of Limerick’s way, and was soon in front with tlie race well won. Green attributed Limerick’s swinging out to the fact that the horse had been racing in Sydney, where they race m the opposite direction to Victorian tracks. The stewards decided to take no action.
