SCHOOL HOSTELS
MINISTER DEFINES THE POSITION
Dominion Special.
Auckland, October 17.
The policy of the Education Department regarding the establishment of hostels at schools was referred to by the Minister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright), when dealing with a request by the Grammar School Board for the provision of a hostel. The Minister said he recognised that the argument for a hostel was a good one, but there were similar applications from all over New Zealand. It was an unfortunate thing that school hostels were not business propositions, although private hostels managed to pay their way. The Department had found hundreds of, thousands, easily a million, for school hostels, and never a penny interest was provided. It was a pity that they were started on that basis, and now it would take a miracle to alter the system. It was true that £50,000 was spent on a hostel at Wellington, but personally he had _ had nothing to do with it. In Napier a large amount of money had been subscribed for the purpose.
