RIFLE SHOOTING

SEASON OPENED AT TRENTHAM THE PETONE CLUB The Petone Rifle Club fired their opening match for the 1926-27 season at Trentham on Saturday. There was a record attendance, with quite a number of new members, including three marksmen from Wanganui, Messrs. C. Kruse, G. Old, and Captain H. T. Simmonds, of New Zealand Bisley fame; also W. Sullivan, from Christchurch. The ranges were 300 and 500yds., and as the conditions were generally good some very fine performances were recorded. The opening fixture took the form of a match between teams chosen by the Deputy-Presidents W. 11. Ballinger and T. Warburton, and after a very interesting contest the team chosen by the latter was victorious by 5 points. At 300yds. Deputy-President W. H. Ballinger registered 43, W. McIver 47'. It. H. Nicholl and E. Ballinger 48 each; and at 500yds. E. Ballinger scored the possible 50, C. Clark 49 /with an inner to finish), — Bollard 48, end several others were close up. E. KARORI CLUB The Karori Rifle Club opened its shooting season with a fortnightly competition at 300 and 500 yards. The weather was dull and overcast, but otherwise the shooting conditions were fairly easy, and some good shoots were put up. The best score off the rifle was put i p by a junior shot, Rflmn. Stanton, of Sydney, won the King’s Prize with a score cf 337.
