THE RACING WORLD

CARTERTON AND DUNEDIN MEETINGS COUNTERSIGN WINS THE GUINEAS MANFRED’S CAULFIELD CUP Race meetings on Saturday were in progress at Carterton and Dunedin. At the local gathering Prince Hal scored in the Wairarapa County Cup and First Acre won the Bunny Memorial Handicap. At Dunedin the Paper Money filly Countersign won the Dunedin Guineas, while the principal handicaps went to Heather Lad and Arpent. A great deal of interest was taken in the racing at Caulfield wheie, on the third day of the V.A.T.C. meeting,. the Caulfield Cup was decided. New Zealanders had an interest in the presence of The Banker, but he was uneua] to the task of defeating the high class colt Manfred, who had been a hot favourite for some time prior to the event. However, he ran a very good second in time nearly equalling the ia.cc record.

CARTERTON MEETING PRINCE HAL WINS THE CUP (By “The Watcher.”) The annual race meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held at Clareville on Saturday in fine weather. After recent rain the track was a little on the dead side, but the going was good. Fields were not large, and the . quality was poor, but there was some interesting racing. Five started in the principal event, the Wairarapa County Cup, which went to Prince Hal from Lady Gav and Merry Day after a muddling race. First Acre won the Bunny Memorial from Blonde and Bonideer. There were two accidents during the day, C. Browne, rider of Hymestrason in the Carterton Hack Handicap, being bumped off at the start, and Tempean, in the Maungaraki Handicap, bolting after passing the post and jumping the course fence. His rider, P. Burgess, was slightly injured, but Browne escaped witlya, shaking. Since the last meeting the club has constructed a commodious, well-lighted totalisator house, which is set further back than the old building, allowing the public ample room, and also making conditions admirable for employees. First Acre, the winner of the Bunny Memorial Handicap, was decorated with the memorial ribbon in the birdcage after the race, and cheers were given for the horse and his connections. Favourites ran fairlv well, but as four of them occupied second places, and their backers lost money, the afternoon could not have been very profitable for the majority. The totalisator turnover was slightly less than for last year’s meeting, being £13,250, as against £14,126, a decrease of £876.

TRIAL PLATE. Cerf was a good favourite for the Trial Plate. In the finish he outclassed his opponents. Hymestrason, Roval Pointer, and Cerf was the early order but Riverna dashed up and led round the turn from Royal Pointer, Theodolite, Cerf, and General Wai. This was the order to the distance, where Cerf came through on the rails and won easily by a couple of lengths from General Wai, who finished over Riverna for second by a length. Royal Pointer was a fair fourth, and then came Lady killer, who got away badly, and Theodolite. CARRINGTON WELTER HANDICAP. Of the six starters in the Carrington Welter Handicap Vesperus was a hot favourite. He carried his backers through but had to do his best at the finish. Tuition led early from Vesperus, but was joined by Hokioi at the six-furlong post, and this pair led Vesperus and Peggy Ford into the straight Hokioi and Vesperus then drew out, and Vesperus, all out, won by a necki Peggv Ford was three lengths away and Mountain Jean a fair fourth. Good riding contributed largely to the win of Vesperus. WAIRARAPA COUNTY CUP. Of the five starters in the County-Cup Merrv Dav was a very hot favourite. All the- riders were apprentices, and there was a long delay at the post, Prince Hal being the principal ofiender. Eventually Mr. O’Connor effected an excellent start, from which they ran in close order for half a mile. Prince Hal was in the, lead, pulling double; the pace being not more than a canter. Then Ladv Gay took charge, also hard held, and the field strung out a little, Merry Day last. On the approach to the turn Merry Day went up but lost her place again almost at once. Lady Gav, Pantier, and Prince Hal led into the straight, where the latter sprinted home by just oyer a length from Ladv Gav, with Merry Dav a length further off. Insurrection was close up. This was not a race at all, only a canter to the . half-mile post and a sprint home. CARTERTON HANDICAP. For the hack sprint Lucky Days was a firm favourite, but there was also solid backing for Vivo and Gourmet. The last-named was very much on his toes in the birdcage, and broke away from the gate as he went for his preliminary, failing to pass the stands. At the start Thomond shot out, and in so doing knocked half the field about, Vivo and Lucky Days being seriously interfered with and C. Brown, rider of Hymestrason, being bumped right off. Thomond was followed down the back bv Silver Tray and Lady Ideal, the others strung right out, with Lucky Days last. Approaching the straight the leaders began to stop, and the back division closed up. Once in 1@? the leaders stopped to a walk, Goujffiiet shooting out and winning bv half a head from Lucky Days, who looked distinctly unlucky, Hyraill came third, a couple of lengths off, and Vivo, who got a bad run, was handy. Then came Riverna, Lady Ideal, and Silver Tray. BUNNY MEMORIAL. Buoyant was favourite for the open sprint, but there was good support for First Acre and Anthonie, Bonideer bolted prior to the start, but did not get far. At the rise of the barrier Buoyant got left, Bonideer going out from First Acre and Anthonie After covering two furlongs Buoyant put in an appearance behind the leaders, having shot up very fast Bonideer led round the turn from First Acre, Anthonie, Buoyant, Benmure. and Polyphemus Once in line, First Acre strode away and won easily by four lengths from Blonde, who got up from the back to beat Bonideer by half a head. Buoyant was close up, with I’olvmethus and Anthonie handy. Then came Standard and Benmure. Buoyant may not have won had he got out on terms, but

he would have made it hard for the winner.

TARATAHI HANDICAP.

Black Mint and David Garrick were the favourites for the Hack Welter Handicap. Black Mint, Sole Mio, Hokioi, David Garrick, and Petal was the order down the back. On the turn Petal moved up fast, and with Black Mint and Sole Mio led David Garrick into the straight. A hundred yards from the post David Garrick caught the leaders and won by the best part of a length from Black Mint, with Petal only a neck off. Sole Mio and Hokioi were next. The winner earned his first bracket in this event. He only just got up, and the class being poor he will have to improve a good deal to hold his own in some of the future engagements made for him.

MAUNGARAKI WELTER HANDICAP.

Birthmark was favourite for the open welter handicap from Alyson and Bay Dighton. The favourite made a bold bid for victorv, but went down to a rank outsider,' Misgovern. Misgovern led from the start from Alyson and Killocra, but the latter gave way early to Tempean and Bonideer. Misgovern was in charge down the back, and on the turn, where she w’as followed by Alyson, Tempean, Bonideer, Bay Dighton, and Birthmark. This lot hundred in the straight, and a slashing finish saw Misgovern stay in front to beat Birthmark by a head, with Blonde another head away. Bonideer, Tempean, and Bay Dighton were right up. Tempean could not be pulled up, and he galloped round the course, jumping a fence and throwing his rider, P. Burgess, who was slightly injured. ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Note was backed as unbeatable for the last race, but was beaten into second place in a spirited finish by the Rossendale filly Polonaise. Lady Ideal and Note led to the turn, where Gourmet showed up temporarily, but Polonaise was brought through with a dashing finish and gained the verdict by threequarters of a length Lady Ideal was a close third, followed by Gourmet, Voronia and Tuition. Girribillie failed to produce anything like his Otaki form.
