SUCCESSFUL JERSEY SALE GOOD PRICES AT PALMERSTON

Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., report having held, in conjunction with Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., a very successful sale of pedigree Jersey bulls and yearling heifers, at the Palmerston North Showgrounds, on Thursday last. The cattle, which were of exceptional quality, were widely distributed. Tho offering comprised 40 yearling heifers and 3G bulls. A special consignment came forward from (ho Horowhenua Jersey Cattle Breeders Club, while the balance of the catalogue was made u.p of selected entries from Manawatu breeders. Waikato buyers operated freely, and secured good cattle, while many other outstanding animals were secured by buyers from North Auckland, Main Trunk, Wanganui, Hawke’s Bav, Wairarapa, Nelson, and Marlborough districts Locai competition was also keen. The top-priced hoifer was secured for export to New South Wales. Included in the offering was the complete crop of sixteen yearling heifers on account of Air. R. L. Horn, of Ohau. These heifers made the great average of <£7o 165., 32 heifers averaged £45 Us., and 28 bulls realised an average price of <£32. A show was held in conjunction with the sale, tho judge being the well-known Waikato breeder, Mr. T. Church. Mr. Church expressed a very high opinion of the cattle which came before him, and in the yearling heifer class ho had a very hard task io find the winners, the’ quality of tho class being so even) In this class Mr. R. L. Horn secured first, second, and third prizes. Air R. Evans was placed with a very nice heifer. Mr. J. H. Mungavtn provided tho winner of the two-year-old bull class, second prize wont to Mrs. •A Banks and Son, and third to Mr. J. A.' Mitchell. The yearling, bn. 1. class was also a strong one, and in this Mr. Church placed a very classy son of Miss Ivv. c.o.m. 7271 b. fat. at the head. This bull was owned by Air. J. Farmers in the Hunter River district are having much trouble with insect pests, which are more prevalent this season than at any time within the memory of the oldest farmer. Myriads of small black flies have attacked the young lucerne plants. In some cases the farmers have sown as often as two or three times. Swarms of caterpillars are eating the pumpkins, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, and other vegetables. On the Manning River large numbers of parrots are doing much damage to young fruit. Swarms of large moths are also prevalent. ROYAL SHOW ENTRIES Dominion Special. Auckland, October 15. Large entries have been received for the Royal Show, which will open mi November IG.
