A movement has been made tn flic I’utarurn district for the establishment 'f a lucerne fnrip (reports the "New Zen land Herald”), tho intention being t< grow lucerne for sale ns pressed hay. ent chaff etc., nnd later possibly for tin production of seed. Five, hundred acres of land have been eecured on the Puta-
ruru-Arapuni Road, aud already about 30 acres have been planted. It is the Intention to plant about 400 acres by next year. Lucerne growing has been carried on successfully on small areas in tho Putaruru district for some years, and tho arrangements made to conduct it on so large a scale on commercial lines show that the people concerned have great faith in the capabilities of the soil for raising this valuable crop. The success of the. venture will have an important influence on the development of dairying not only about Pu.taruru, but throughout the great pumice areas inwards Taupo, because. If. lucerne can b.r raised profitably it wall stimulate dairy farming in a marked manner as lucerne is invaluable as a succulent fodder for milking herds in summer, and lucerne hay in combination with roots cannot be excelled for winter feed.
