The Minister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright) left for the north by the Limited express last night.
The Hon. K. S. Williams, who arrived at Opotiki early on Wednesday afternoon, was entertained at a conversazione, welcomed formally, and congratulated on In’s elevation to Ministerial rank. Subsequently Mr. Williams received deputations dealing with the roads, the railway, and the hydro electric scheme. He was entertained at a banquet in the evening. On every hand the Minister received congratulations from his constituents. He left for Gisborne yesterday morning.—Press Assn. Lord Byng receives a Viscountcy in recognition of his sendees in Canada, states a “Sun” cable message from London.
Dr. A. Paterson, of Christchurch, who has been attending the International Dental Congress at Philadelphia, returned by the Niagara on Monday. The Rev. Joseph W. Kemp, minister in charge of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle, returned by the Niagara on Monday after a seven months’ holiday trip to Great Britain and America. Dr. C. D. Meadowcroft, son of Councillor F. Meadowcroft, of Wellington, met , with an accident while motoring with another medical man from London to Bournemouth, on Sunday, September 5. Dr. Meadowcroft, who is first assistant surgeon at the Kensington, Fulham, and Chelsea General Hospital, was accompanying Dr. A. L. Abel, and tjie latter’s private secretary, Miss C. M. Curry, to Bournemouth to perform an urgent operation. While running through Winchester at 45 miles an hour, Dr. Abel, who was driving, swerved to avoid some pheasants which had flown down on to the road in front of the car. By. mistake, Dr. Abel then put his foot on the accelerator instead of the brake, with the result that the car shot across the road, struck a tree, and capsized. Each of the occupants was injured, and the car smashed Dr. Meadowcroft suffered a dislocated pelvis, and was conveyed to the Royal Hospital, London, where at latest advices he was doing well. A Rotorua Press Association message states that Mayor C. H. Clinkaid met with a serious accident yesterday, falling from the roof of a garage to the concrete floor. He was removed to the hospital, where an X-ray examination disclosed a severe injury to the spine. An operation was stated to be necessary.
At the Harbour. Board offices on Wednesday a presentation was made to Mr. Harry Charles, officer in charge of the Ferry Wharf, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The presentation, which was made by Captain Monro, traffic manager, consisted of a clock and a silver perfume bottle. Captain Monro, on behalf of the staff, expressed appreciation of the .many good qualtics of the recipient, and wished him happiness and prosperity.
The death occurred at Stratford on Wednesday night of Mr. Arthur E. Copping, who held the post of editor of the Stratford “Evening Post” from 1904 till bis retirement in October last. —Press Assn. Dr. Valintine, Director-General of Health, left Wellington tor the Taranaki district on Tuesday morning. Yesterday he conferred with the Taranaki Hospital Board at New Plymouth, and will return to headquarters to-dav. A beautiful window, erected to the memory of the late Dr. Moore Richard Neligan, Bishop of Auckland, from 1903 to 1910, was unveiled yesterday morning in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Parnell, by the Primate of New Zealand —Special Correspondent. The death occurred this week at his residence, Woburn Road, Northland, of Mr. Wilfred Cooper, at one time president and secretary of the Wellington Trades Council and secretary of the Wellington Painters’ Union and New Zealand Painters’ Federation. His funeral on Wednesday’ was largely attended by those connected with labour organisations. The Rev. G. Stowell officiated at the graveside. Mr. William Begg, of Wellington, has left tor Auckland. Mr. Kissel, chief electrical engineer, Public Works Department, was a passenger from Nelson by the Arahti ra. Messrs. G. T. London and D. McKenzie have been je-elected managers of Hie Petone yechnk-al School.
