Masterton, October 14. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association was held yesterday, Mr. G. H. Perry presiding. Information was received from the Masterton County Council to the effect that the forming and metalling of Solway Road, which gives access to the showgrounds from the south, would bo carried out with certain modifications. Advice was received from the Railway Board, in response to a request from the association, that in addition to the general issue, tickets at excursion rates would also be issued to exhibitors and attendants in charge of live stock exhibits travelling from North Island stations outside the' area covered by the general issue, to attend the forthcoming Masterton Show. Messrs. W. M. Webster and S. Fletcher wrote accepting the office of hon. veterinary surgeons. The Shorthorn Society of New Zealand wrote offering a shield to the Masterton Association for the champion Shorthorn bull nt the next Masterton Show, on the condition that the bull is registered in the New Zealand Shorthorn herd-book.— The offer was accepted with thanks. The Otago A. and P. Association wrote asking if the association had any definite ruling as to whether the owner of an animal at the date of mating or at the date of foaling or calving,, should be considered the breeder. There was considerable diversity cf opinion on this matter, and it was decided on a division by thirteen votes to nine that the Masterton Association ruling was that the owner at the time of birth was the breeder. Osmond and Son. Wellington, were accorded a vote of thanks for the offer of their usual donation of prizes for the show. Mr. G. F. Moore (Kai Iwi), wrote offering to replace the twenty-five guinea points prize in the Hereford section, which he won outright. The New Zealand Friesian Association advised that a gold medal would be given for most points in the Friesian classes, on the condition that there were at least twenty registered animals entered. Advice was received from the Railway Department that an extension had been made in the regulations governing the transport of stock to shows, to allow owners of exhibits proceeding to shows to combine their exhibits and treat them as one consignment, which would tend to reduce the freight as against the present method of individual consignments. LONDON TALLOW MARKET The Bank of New Zealand, vroduce department. lias received the "oilowing advice from its London office, under date October 13:—Owing to absence of demand, tallow sales will not ba held this week. HAWKES BAY SPRING SHOW RECORD ENTRIES. Visitors to Hawke’s Bay during the next week should time their visit to take in the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s spring show, which is to take place on October 20 and 21, and for which the Railway Department are issuing special .excursion fares. Splendid entries have been received in the competitive classes •nd horse competitions. and 90,000 square’fect has been taken up in motor and trade displays. The show will be held on the society’s magnificent new grounds at. Tomoana, which has been greatly improved since the opening show last year, and every possible thing has been attended to for the comfort and convenience of visitors. PHI LOSOPHICAL SOCIETY CLASSIFICATION OF NEW ZEALAND SOILS. At the meeting of the geological section of the Wellington Philosophical Society held on Wednesday, Mr. M. Ongley in the chair, a paper was read by Mr. H T Ferrar on soil classification and soil surveys. The speaker explained various methods or clr/sifying soils. These were not all equally applicable, for soil surveys were usually undertaken with some special end in view. Illustrations were given, by means of lantern slides ami maps of a few soil surveys in progress in various parts cf the world. The several independent soil surveys being carried out in New Zealand, each with a special end in view, were then described. The. Cawthron Institute is surveying Nelson province, the Department of Agriculture is attacking the problem of iron-starvation of cattle, formerly called bush-sickness. Otago university has carried out an iodine survey m its relation to goitre, and the speaker was engaged in a eoil survey of- irrigation areas in Central Otago. CARRIAGE OF PIGS Bv notice in yesterday's “Gazette” the Railway Department intimates, an amendment in the present regulation governing the carriage of piss. It is to the effect that the Department may decline to extend the benefit, of the reduced rate to consignments of pigs consigned to any person or firm utilising other means of transport than the railway for the carriage of bacon, hams, and other products manufactured from euch pigs when the railway is available for tho tians port of these goods.

WELLINGTON SHOW ASSOCIATION A net profit 0f.£3056 was.secured by the Wellington Show Association (in corporated) on the show held during the year and this is disclosed in the balance-sheet for the year ended September 30, just issued. KEEN DEMAND FOE HEIFERS., BY Teleghaph.—Press association. 'Palmerston North, October 17. The fourth Manawatu Jersey show anti sale was held to-day, there being 77 animals from the Manawatu and Hqrowhenua Jersey Clubs. Bulls showing quality were in good demand, but poorer animals were neglected. There was a keen demand for heifers. Mr. It. L. Horn (Levin) had an entry of 16 animals, which averaged £6B apiece. Tho top price for the sale (150 guineas) was obtained for a heifer, Kxiku Countess, bought by Wright, Stephenson and Co. for export., a heifer by the same breeder, Kuku' Nella, was purchased for 97 guineas by Mr. A. J. Smith (Otorohanga), and a bull, Kuku Bright Owl, was bought lw Mr. A. Mitchell (Longbu.cn) for 100 guineas. Mr. J. Smith, jun., obtained the top price for bulls, 107 guineas being paid by Wright, Stephenson and Co.
