‘NO FEASIBLE SCHEME’
, SOUTH ISLAND SERVICE TO MELBOURNE Dominion Special. Christchurch, October 13. Asked if the Government contemplated making a move in the direction of establishing a direct line of steamers from the South Island- ports to Melbourne, or bad considered subsidising such a service, the Hon W. D. Stewart (Acting Prime Minister) today said that the matter had been considered from time to time. "But,” he added, “no feasible scheme has been put forward which would not involve the Government in an expenditure which the results of the service to the Dominion as a whole would not justify.”
