Dominion Special. Christchurch, October 4. In discussing a remit from the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce tonight, the council of the Canterbury Chamber indicated that it has no intention of asking for steamer services between the South Island and Australia unless there is some prospect of their being payable. The South Canterbury Chamber asked for support for the following remit to the annual conference:—"That this conference affirms the desirableness of a weekly mail and cargo sendee between Melbourne ,’and Bluff and other South Island ports, and the Government be urged to grant the necessary subsidy to make this service possible.” it was agreed that the remit was not ill line with the Canterbur, Chamber’s decision, and it was decided to ask the South Canterbury Chamber to furnish the information on which it bseefl its resolution.
