ENTHUSIASM FOR THE BEAUTY CONTEST
MR. ISITT IS SURPRISED
Dominion Special.
Christchurch, October 4.
'Christchurch is going cranky, at least a section of it,” said the Hou. L. M. Isitt, M.L.C., this morning, in taking part in a civic reception to Commissioner Hay and Mrs. Hay in the City Council 'Chambers. “I refer to the advertising campaigns that are being carried out for the girl born with the handsomest body. The newspapers have always been on the make, only they are a little bit more so to-day. lam surprised that such a competition should have been received with such enthusiasm. A girl with a pretty chin has no more right to hold her chin in the air than a man who is gifted with more brains than his fellow. (Applause.) I was addressing some Sunday-school children yesterday, and I told them that it is far better to be nice than to look nice. (Applause.) If the newspapers are going to put on any more stunts I would suggest that they should give a free trip to the man or woman, no matter how humble they be, who, in the opinion of their neighbours, had lived noble, selfsacrificing lives. There is many, a Salvation Army lass who is far more deserving of a trip to Australia and a rest than a girl with a well-formed face and body.” (“Hearl heart” and loud applause.) When he was returning thanks for the reception accorded him and his wife Commissioner Hay said that he agreed with what Mr. Isitt had said. "It is a strain on accidental beauty, he averred.
