“CHRISTIAN HERETICS CLUB”
DISSATISFIED UNIVERSITY STUDENTS Dominion Special.
Christchurch. October 1. For some time there has been, dissatisfaction among the students of Canterbury College with the workings of the Christian Union as constituted at the University, matters came to a head at the annual general meeting last evening, when it was decided that the Canterbury College Student Christian Union as at present constituted be dissolved. Meetings of the men and women members were immediately held separately to consider the formation ot new separate unions. While the women’s meeting progressed fairly smoothly, that of the men led to a vigorous discussion. Mr. R. D. Baker moved: “That this group of students formally constitute' themselves into a Canterbury College Men’s Christian Union.” An amendment vias moved: “That this meeting of students constitute themselves into a Canterbury College Heretics Club.” The reasons stated in favour- of this amendment were mainly that the students generally- were rebellious at such. a name 'as Christian being embodied in the title of anv internal club of the college. Full and open discussion ot all problems that arise was advocated. A second amendment followed: “ 1 hat in order to combine ideals and activity of thought, the name of the new union be the Canterbury College Christian Heretics Union.” It was finally decided to appoint a committee, representative of both schools of thought, with power to suggest a name to the general meeting at in early date.
