DOMINION POTATOES
PROHIBITION SOUGHT BY N.S.W. GROWERS
DANGER OF DISEASE ALLEGED
Sydney, September 30. A deputation of local potato growers waited on the Minister of Agriculture (Mr. W. F. Dunn) and asked for the prohibition of the importation of New Zealand potatoes. Due delegate submitted a sample taken from a hundred bags of New Zealand potatoes, and claimed that they were intended for seed, as they were too small for table use.
A second delegate said that although a distributor wa.s willing to give an assurance that he would not sell New Zealand potatoes for seed, the purchaser could do as he liked with them.
The Minister, in reply, said that his Department did not regard very seriously the probability of powdery scab spreading, but he would make inquiries and discuss the matter with experts from the new viewpoint. He would make strong representations tn the Federal authorities for the prohibition of potatoes from New Zealand.
