THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "The Watcher.”) Nominations for the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club will close to-night at 9 o’clock. Tho telegraph office at Carterton closes at 8 p.m. Nominations for the annual meeting of the Waverley Racing Club will close to-night at 8 o’clock. The telegraph office at Waverley closes at 5 p.m. Nominations for rhe spring meeting of tho Masterton Racing Club, which is to be held at Trantham, will close on Monday at 8 p.m. Entries for this meeting can he made, if convenient, at the offices of the Wellington Racing Club up to 9 p.m. Nominations for all events at the spring meeting of the Wellington Racing Club and forfeit (1 sov.) for tho Wellesley Stakes are due on Monday at 9 p.m. Up to yesterday the Trentham tracks were dry and fast, but the rain would have the effect of softening them again. Contrary to the usual position at this period of the year, however, the moisture is very welcome and will do good. The weather was misty and several heavy showers fell during work yesterday, which was the last of the late after-breakfast mornings. In future the tracks will be open at 5 a.m. The grass and the tan tracks were available, and both were used. There was hot a great deal of fast work. H. Telford was first out with his two juveniles, but they were not asked to do anything strenuous. Humoresque followed with four furlongs on the grass under a feather-weight in 50,|sec. Inoe ran over the same distance , m slightly better time, on the tan, which is a faster track. Climax and Exhibition took 54sec. for four furlongs on the tan, and on the same track, Grand Knight, setting off from the mile post, warmed up to his work over the last seven. He galloped very freely and evenly all the way, running the first three furlongs in 39sec. and the first half ii] 52sec., finishing up tho full distance in Imin. 30 2-ssec. Grand Knight’s next appearance will lie in the Flying Handicap) at the Carterton meeting. Fool’s Paradise, who is looking very well, was not asked to go out of steady pacing, but he put great dash into his work, and was always anxious to go faster. He will make his next appearance at the Otaki meeting. Black Cat did good work with a sprint down the straight. Hokioi and Main galloped a mile in Imin. 48isec., the first half in 55sec. Pantier beat Spode over four furlongs on the grass in 52sec. Indian Sage was given the same task as Grand Knight, and he ran exactly the same time for the seven furlongs, but he went much faster in the early part, running the first four in 50 3-ssec., and naturally he did not finish so well as his stable mate. Indian Sage claims two engagements on the first day of the Otaki meeting, and will start in tho principal handicap if a suitable rider can be engaged. Barry has been offered the mount.

Gauntlet, who injured himself at tho Marton meeting, was schooled over three hurdles with I. Tilson in the saddle. Gauntlet did not display the dash he had in his initial schooling efforts, but he gave a satisfactory showing all the same. Glument, who hurt himself at Dannevirke, and was unable to start at Napier Park, was his companion afterwards in a steady bit of pacing on the tan. Gauntlet still moves a bit short.

Buoyant, who has improved out of all knowledge since he was last seen on the tracks, was sprinted half a mile on the grass, and he ran 50sec. He will race at Otaki and Carterton prior to Wellington, and may need a race or two before being seen at his best. Silver Tray, who joined H. Telford’s stable at the Wanganui meeting, has been transferred to D. McCauley’s establishment. She was on the trades yesterday, but did not gallop fast. Theodolite sprinted four furlongs well in 50isec., and Note took 50sec., going fast .over the last three. , J. W. Lowe returned from Auckland yesterday with Star Ranger, Jubilance and" Bourse. • Tanadees and Laughing Prince were on the tracks yesterday, looking none the worse for their Avondale racing. The turfing of the lawn at Trentham in front of the totalisator has been extended, and now a considerable area round the steps of the ramps leading up to the new public stand is laid down in grass. The Auckland horseman, C. Browne, is expected at Trentham before the end of the week. Browne has been promised a fair amount of riding from Trentham stables and he has been showing good form in the saddle at the recent meetings. The imported mare Violet 11. was a hot favourite for her .race at Geraldine yesterday, but she went down to Lancer, a three-year-old bay gelding by Greyspear—Bella Donna trained at Riccarton by J. Pearson for Mr. G. .G. Holmes. Lancer’s price was lucrative, while . the supporters of the rnnnerup were faced with a severe loss. Lancer raced last season, but bis form was poor, and he was only once in a place, running second to Cultivation at his last start.

Moorland was not telegraphed amongst the acceptors for the Squatter’s Handiean at Geraldine yesterday, but as so frequently happens in such cases he proved the winner. Moorland won the same race two years ago. The New Zealand Cup candidate Full Swing paid a short price when she won (he Geraldine Cun yesterday from Heather Lad. She has been kept fairly well forward since she raced last, and she has a big following in the south for more important engagements ahead. Royal Game was beaten again yes("rdny at Geraldine, and it would seem that ho has perhaps had enough of it for the time being. Waetea has shown no form at all recently, but Mr. W. H. Ballinger secured a second in tho hurdles vesterdav with Axle. A cable message from Sydney yesterday stated that the A.J.C. committee had reduced the riding susnension of three months imposed on J. Toohev, by one month. He will thns.be able to ride at the Victoria Racing Club's spring meeting. Toohey was previously unsuccessful in an appeal against his sentence, which meant a,serious loss to him, as he is one of tho lending jockeys '•> tho Commonwealth and commands Iho best mounts, including that on the crack fiFlv Valicaro. W. Pine has taken Seatown and Vaward through to Hastings for their cnga"ements there to-morrow. Seatown will be a starter in the Hawke’s . Bay Guineas and Vawnrd in the handicap. Vaward ran a very cood race in tho TTigeio Handicap on the second day of the Wanganui meeting, when opposed to the best class as represented by Beacon Light and Mandane, and he should be

well forward at the finish cf to-morrow's event. ... ~ Carawock is working as well as anything on the Otaki tracks at the premt time, and will be a starter at the Otaki meeting where W. Bowden will have the ride. . Although Commendation’s form is outstanding amongst those engaged in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas to-morrow, there is a fine field engaged, and Seatown, Hynanna and High Pitch will make a race of it with him B H. Morris will have the mount on Licinius at Hastings to-morrow, and he may bo able to break the sequence of seconds of the Lucullus gelding, Licinius is a very consistent performer and deserves a change of luck. The two-year-old Chelone (Leighton— Cheloma), who ran second in the Nursery Handicap at the Avondale meeting on Monday, has been purchased from Mr. G. Stead by Mr. W. H. Gaisford, owner of Commendation. and will in future be trained by G. Jones at Greenmeadows. The Wanganui ho®|Bman, P. McGuire, is at present an initiate of the Wanga‘nui Hospital as the result of an accident while schooling Whenuanui. The disappointing son of Acre attempted to run off at one of the obstacles and crashed through the wing, breaking McGuire’s ankle and injuring his ribs. Mia Bella started twice ever hurdles at the Avondale meeting, but she came to grief each day. She was going particularly well on both tccasions when she tipped out. Her trainer, F. E. Loomb, had only put her into work again this season after a good spell. Te Maire (H. Burt) and Risk (Stratton), two members from L. Knapp’s stable, did some good schooling at Awanuni on Tuesday over five hurdles. The pair kept together until going down the back, a peck by Risk losing him a lot of ground. Although he recovered the lost ground, he could not hold his companion in the run home over the last two fences. Te Maire went particularly . well. Askari is back again on the Awapuni tracks after having had a period of road work. His log appears to have made a good recovery, but it has not been seriously tried.
