A magnificent specimen of white pine tree, 130 ft. high, was felled recently in the Upper Waitotara district (says (he Patea "Press”). The big stick was Sft. in diameter at the base and sft. fin. at the first limb, 60ft. from the ground. It is calculated that 18.000 ft. of timber will be cut from the tree, quite apart from firewood As is well known, there is very keen competition between the railways and motor-lorries for the carriage of dairy produce from this district to Now Plymouth (says the Stratford “Post”), and the directors of several factories have been seriously considering the advantapes of each particular method of transport. The directors of one of the large factories, after going into the matter, have decided to send their produce ov road, and one of them informed a reporter that this would result in a saving of 10s. 3d. a ton.
