SALVATION ARMY
COMMISSIONER HAY WELCOMED AT PALMERSTON. Dominion Special. Palmerston North, September 29. Commissioner J. Hay, of the Salvation Army, the newly appointed director of the movement in New Zealand, was accorded a civic welcome at the Citadel to-night, when there was a representative gathering. The Mayor (Mr. F. J.. Nathan), in extending a welcome, said that Commissioner Hay had been in New Zealand 17 years before and upon returning to the country had been impressed by its growth and by the development of the Army movement. Commissioner Hay had for 12 years directed Hie work in Australia, and it had been said that in that country he was worth £lO,OOO a year to the Army. He had also given valuable service in South Africa, and now came to New Zealand, where a warm welcome was bis. After speaking eulogistically of the work of Mrs. Hay, the Mayor went on to deal , with Salvation Army matters generally and viewed with approval the proposal to establish a university in Palmerston. He expressed deep appreciation of the social work carried out bv the Army, which he said was a monument to unselfishness.
Addresses of welcome were given by Mr. J. A. Nash. ALP., Adjutant Birks, and Colonel Carmichael. In replying Commissioner and Mrs. Hay afforded their hearers an insight into conditions existing in those cwmtries where they had carried on their work and expressed optimism and confidence in regard to the future scope of the Salvation Armv in New Zealand.
