WANTED TO WORK IN WELLINGTON
SO RAN AWAY FROM ROME. A 16-year-old youth named Basil James Washington Cockle in the Magistrate's Court yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of being an idle and disorderly person. "Accused,” said Sub-Inspector Harvey, "was found sleeping in a packing case in Waterloo Quay on Monday night. When questioned by a constable he said ho had run away front Christchurch and come'to Wellington on board the Wahine for the purpose of securing employment in this city. 'He stated l.e was sleeping out because he had no money with which to obtain a bed. .lie also said he was cold and hungry. The only thing we know about him is that he was convicted and admonished for theft at the Children’s Court in Christchurch in August,' 1924.” Mr. Page, S.M.: Why did you run away ? Accused: I wanted to get a job, sir. Could you not have obtained one in Christchurch ?—"Yes, sir, but I wanted to come here.” Cockle was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence ■when called upon within twelve months. Ale was also ordered to remain in the Salvation Armv Home until his parents in Christchurch had been communicated with.
