ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER

MAORI YOUTH TO STAND TRIAL By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Waipawa, September- 28. A Maori youth, Hori Ngatoro, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of attempting to murder an elderly man, Edward Grace Watts, at Otane, on September 6. Accused, in a signed statement to the police, admitted entering Watts’s house during the latter’s absence. He said that after taking food he lay down on a bed, where he was surprised by Watts. According to accused, Watts punched him first and then they closed. Shots were fired during a struggle for possession of a gun, one entering Watts's left arm and side. Accused stated that he had been an inmate of a receiving home in Napier. The evidence of Watts went to show that as soon as lie opened the bedroom door accused fired at him point-blank, and that the second shot went off during the struggle.
