THE CLEANUP
'' DATES AND BLOCKS ARRANGED WHAT HOUSEHOLDERS ARE ASKED TO DO The Sanitation Committee of the Health Week Campaign at its meeting last evening adopted a report of the cleau-up sub-eomniittee, setting out the dates on which various parts of the citv and suburbs will be attended to. City -and suburbs are to be divided up into five blocks, and the work will be concentrated on each block in accordance with the programme drawn . up, with necessarily some give and take as to the hour, or even tlx dav, cm which the collection in a new b.oek may start on account of the impossibility of definitely estimating just how long it may take to do the worn in any given area. A good deal will depend tinon the weather, but in order that rubbish need not be left lying about longer than is necessary, daily advertisements will advise oi any akeratrjn. When these notifications are given, the report continues, it will greatly assist the City Council if the residents of each respective block will place their refuse as near as possible (inside) to their front gates by 8.15 a.ni. on the morning on which their block collection starts. The blocks are as follows :— Block 1. Tn start at the tram sheds. Thorndon Quay, north end, working south riv lit through to Sutherland Crescent, Melrose, the eastern boundary being the waterfront, stopping at Point Jern jnghaui, and taking m Oriental Bav All houses on the city side of Mount Victoria will fall within Block 1, running straight through to Sutherland Crescent. The western boundary will lie along Grant Road to the Botanical Gardens, thence Sydney and Museum Streets, tin: Terrace, Abel-Smith, Nairn. Hankey, Wallace, John and Hanson Streets, Adelaide Road right through to Wakefield Park, taking in all side streets. . , Collecting days for Block 1: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday October 11, 12 and 13. Block 2. Roseneath, Hataitai, Kilbirnie, Lyall Bav, Rongotai, Miramar, and Seatoun, starting in Roseneath arid finishing in Seatoun. Collecting dates: Wednesday, Ihursday, Friday. Saturday, October 13 to 16." Block 3. Karori, Northland, Kelburn, Taitville, Highbury, Mitchelltown, beginning at Afakara Hill and finishing at Aro Street. Collecting dates: Saturday. Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday, October ! 6 to 20. Block 4. Brooklyn, Vogeltown, Mornington, commencing at Brooklyn Road and finishing at the Hutchison Road tip. Collecting dates: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, October 20 to 22. Block 5. Khandallah, Ngaio, Kiaiwarra, Highland Park and Wadestown, commencing at Khandallah North and finishing at Main Road, Wadestown. • Collecting dates: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, October 21 to 23. It will be noticed that the clean-up will extend beyond the Health Week period, for, -even with the best weather conditions, the task is too big to be handled economically in one week If all goes well, however, the work may be completed two or three days inside programme time. As has already been stated, the Sanitation Committee will this year make a charge for the removal of rubbish, on the basis of ss. »-r cubic yard of material, smaller ouantities nro rata' ' As a cubic vard represents practically a cartload, the charge to the average householder will not. be more than ninenence or a shilling These charges will not cover the cost of the clean-up bv something like £250, possible more, but the committee feels that it is only bv spreading the cost over the whole city in sinnll charges that the clean-up can be made worth while, the total amount available .for Health Week this year being inadequate to allow of a sufficient grant for a free cleanup.
