Owing to paucity of entries, the Victorian Band Association has docided to abandon the Ballarat £lOOO championship contest, to have been held next month. Seventv-five soldiers . and twentyeight Yaqui Indians were killed and manv wounded on both sides in a battle in the Sonora State, according to a dispatch received from Guaymas (chief port of the State of Sonora in Mexico). An unusual strike occurred at Beira, the Portuguese East Coast port, where all Government officials ceased work owing to a dispute about salaries. Jn recognition the association of local traders dosed their stores as a mark of sympathy with the strikers. Scotland Yard has been called in to solve the mystery of the poisoning of a hundred thousand goldfish in tanks belonging to a London merchant, H. Gav, and including consignments from Ita'lv, China, and Japan. The total loss was estimated at £2OOO. Gay, states that two foreigners called to inspect the fish and one managed to get him awav from the tanks for a short time. He suspects foreign rivalry, as he is the only Englishman in the trad> The consignment was uninsured, since it is Impossible to insure goldfish.
