A statement made at Dunedin that diving suits to be donned at Lake Wakatipu will be the first to be used in New Zealand, and probably the world, in search for gold cannot be sustained (says an exchange). Mr. Alfred Gibbs, of Murchison, states that as far back as 1915 a company started diving for gold in the Mangle* River, near'Murchison, the ordinary tvpe of diving suit being employed, with two men turning the handle of the airpumping machine. The average depth of water at the locality explored was Oft. and at places the divers descended 20ft. The operations were continued for about three weeks, and were abandoned because not sufficient gold was obtained to pay for this method of securing it.
