POLICE EXAMINATIONS

MEMBERS OF THE NEW BOARD

For the first time in the history of the New Zealand Police Force, the oldtime method of examination . for the uniformed branch and detectives, with the Commissioner as judge, has been done away with, and an entirely new system, contrived by Mr. W. B. Mcllveney, the Commissioner, substituted for it. Ever since 1913 examinations have been held amongst both branches of the service on law, detective work, uniform work, literature, and ofiger subjects. At these examinations the Commissioner has always ruled, and his decision in allotting maiks has been given as final. Now, however, instead of that scheme, an Examination Board, comprising Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., the senior Magistrate of New Zealand (chairman) ; Inspector S. Rawle, of Wellington, who is not only an expert in both branches, but was for four years in charge of the detectives in Auckland, representing the Criminal Investigation Branch; and Mr. W. Wohlmann, superintendent in charge of the Auckland district, representing the uniform branch. With the chairman’s wide knowledge of law, Mr. Rawle’s great experience in the detective branch, and Mr. Wohlmann’s understanding of the uniform department, the Commissioner thinks they will be better able to award marks than he himself would be. The first examinations under the new conditions are now being held.
